I am having a problem getting the ISA Server to install onto my server. I have had numerous other problems in trying to get this application to install, this is the latest.

I was able to install the Enterprise Server AD Extensions successfully. But when I attempt to install the server (either in Standalone Server Mode or in Integrated Mode) I receive the message 'Could Not Initialize ISA Server Settings'. And the install ends.

I checked the ISA install log (ISAS) and noticed several entries:

ISA Setup: At REGMAP_OpenObject (SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS SETUP (ACME)\Table Files)
ISA Setup: At REGMAP_CreateOrOpenObject (reg key is SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS SETUP (ACME)\Table Files)
ISA Setup: can't open reg key SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS SETUP (ACME)\Table Files
ISA Setup: At REGMAP_OpenObject (SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS SETUP (ACME)\Table Files)
ISA Setup: At REGMAP_CreateOrOpenObject (reg key is SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS SETUP (ACME)\Table Files)
ISA Setup: can't open reg key SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS SETUP (ACME)\Table Files
ISA Setup: At REGMAP_OpenObject (SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS SETUP (ACME)\Table Files)
ISA Setup: At REGMAP_CreateOrOpenObject (reg key is SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS SETUP (ACME)\Table Files)
ISA Setup: can't open reg key SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS SETUP (ACME)\Table Files
ISA Setup: At REGMAP_OpenObject (SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS SETUP (ACME)\Table Files)
ISA Setup: At REGMAP_CreateOrOpenObject (reg key is SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS SETUP (ACME)\Table Files)
ISA Setup: can't open reg key SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS SETUP (ACME)\Table Files

I am assuming that since it cannot open the registry keys is the root to the problem, but I am not sure. They appear at the beginning of the log. At the end where the the failure is reported there isn't anything to note.

ISA Setup: MSFtpSvc has 0 dependent services
ISA Setup: Restoring iisadmin
ISA Setup: iisadmin has 1 dependent services
ISA Setup: Setup has NOT completed successfully

So I am stuck. Any help would be appreciated.

Brian,

You certainly come up with he hard questions, don't ya? :-)

Do you know what security template was applied to the server? Perhaps the security settings are such that its preventing the ISA Server installation from completing normally?

Hello Tom,

Not sure what template was applied. Originally the RC1 extensions were applied to a tree level server and I started to receive domain permissions errors that Jon Vicars from Micajah reported. Got that resolved (I posted a reply for it). Now I get this using the MSND release version.

I originally setup this server as a member server of my domain and tried installing the Extensions to the Schema Master and Domanin Nameing Master server. This went well.

I then ran the install and received an error that it couldn't see the server extensions. So I ran DCPROMO and made it a domain controller and forced an AD sync with it. Using the Active Directory Replication tool, it shows the servers to be fully replicated.

I tried to re-install the server extensions, but the installer prompted me if I wanted to remove them (which I didn't).

So that is where I am at. Thanks for your quick reply.

Hello Tom,

I did what I think I should have done in the first place. I demoted my ISA server (the one I couldn't get ISA to install on) and removed it from my domain. I ran DCPROMO and created a new Forrest Level Domain and Installed ISA server without any problems. I then created a transitive trust with my primary domain and will go on from there. I assume there will be some DNS issues to deal with, but at least I have gotten off the starting block.

I have about 10 Forrest Level domains on our network, so I would have had to deal with the issues anyway. Thanks for your help and consideration. Can't wait for you book to ship.

Hi Brain,

Good to hear that you got things sorted out. AD problems and the things that can come out of them can really drive one crazy! But I think you came up with the best solution.

Thanks for the positive words on the book! Debi wrote the chapter that discusses the Pro's and con's of creating dedicated ISA Domains in the same/different forest and how that impacts subsequent decisions. She's a great writer, so you'll get a lot out of it. She's a real AD Pro. Someday I'm going to harpoon her and force her to start participating on this board!

Thanks!

Tom
