We have a general question regarding configuration of a 3-Legged Perimeter network and ADSL Modem/Router and published servers in ISA Server 2003 (Windows 2003 Actice Directory Environment).

I understand that when you publish a server whether it be from your internal or perimeter networks you are effectively publishing the port on the external interface of the ISA Server itself so that (external) requests for certain services are routed via the ISA server to the actual internal or permieter servers on those particular ports.

Adding an ADSL modem / Router to the equation how does this affect server publishing ? Our ADSL Modem / Router will sit on the edge of our network with its own external IP address. I'm assuming that our ISA servers external interface will connect to the Router / Modem into one of its LAN ports.

What is the best way to route external requests to published servers via this ADSL Router (ie. using port forwarding or NAT) ?

Furthermore we have an external DNS on our perimeter network which services requests for publically available services (WWW and SMTP). I am assuming that I have to change the entries for my published servers to the external interface of the new ADSL router and let either port forwarding or NAT relay these communications to the external interface of the ISA Server ?

Hi Stanley,

Just forwarding all inbound connections through the DSL NAT device to the external address on the ISA firewall.

HTH,
Tom
