Hi guys Im working with a network of +100 computers, most of them are laptops. I want them to connect through a ISA server (proxy) without causing the users problems when connecting to a different network. Most of these users are running around to different clients and therefore they need to have direct access when not connected to my network. Ive been looking at solutions like automatic discovery and automatic connection script but somehow Ive not done everything right, since they apparently do not work. I cannt see anything on the performance monitor, but when I manually insert the ISA server IP in my IE settings, the performance monitor starts moving. Can you guys help me with this ? Id appreciate it immensely. With regards Stefan

You could start by telling us what you setup. WPAD DHCP option 252? WPAD DNS CName? WPAD config in ISA?

Care to grace us with the details? Did you enable WPAD in ISA? What port? What is the URL in option 252? Did you test the URL from the browser? Did you test with FWCTool? What does the live log report?

Yeah I enabled the WPAD in the ISA server, port 8080. I will get back to you with the other options, I didnt "test" it really, but I used the fully qualified dns name of the server.m However, it seems I didnt add the port number.

This is what I got when testing the autodetect feature with FwcTool Detection details: Timeout is set to 60 seconds Locating WSPAD URL in DHCP Server Locating option 252 in DHCP Reading network adapters information DHCP option for WPAD not found WSPAD URL was not found in DHCP Server Locating WSPAD URL in DNS Server Locating domain name in registry Opening registry key: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters Querying registry value: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Domain Domain name found: domain-name.com Resolving address: domain-name.com. Domain name found: wpad.domain-name.com. WSPAD URL found in DNS Server: http://wpad.domain-name.com/wspad.dat Initializing Web server connection Resolving IP addresses for wpad.domain-name.com Resolved 1 address(es): 10.66.64.15 Connecting to address #1: 10.66.64.15:80 Waiting for address #1 to connect Connection to address #1 failed Failed to detect ISA Server Result: The command failed and was not completed. [edit] However, I saw that the port number was 80 so I changed it to 80 on the ISA server to see if it worked and it did. Now the automatic detection works. But not for the 252 tho, only through the DNS (which is good enough).

AFAIK, DNS WPAD must be on port 80. For DHCP, make sure the entire URL is in lowercase. If it is port 80, you need not specify the port.

Is the client you are testing getting its IP from DHCP? Option 252 will only work for clients that actually get their IP from DHCP. I think that if/when making changes, you may need to renew your DHCP lease to pick up the change.

Hi again Thanks a ton for the input, I realized I had only added the 252 feature in the DHCP but did nothing more (I was sure I had finished the process).
