I can't connect to Microsoft Update website, the website kept displaying error message that it can't access the computer. Although I've put Microsoft Update websites into trusted site in IE settings, it still won't work. Perhaps there's a certain Firewall Policy, Network & Network Rules that I must make in ISA Server 2004 configuration before it let the computer access ActiveX website contents? Anyone know if there's an article discuss this matter? Thank you.

There are quite a few threads on this topic that a search should reveal. You can either add the required sites to the system policy or create an anonymous rule for localhost.

Hi LLigetfa, I've been following some of others same problem like mine where mostly are helped by you too, and it's been very helpfull; what I did to make it work is these steps: 1) Put the ISP VPN IP Addresses in Internet Allow Access Policy at Firewall Policy 2) The above Internet Allow Access Policy destination is set to External, which means everyone (anonymous users) can access the internet to anywhere... When I tried to use the Domain Name Sets for Allowed Sites Access (the sites are: windowsupdate.microsoft.com & microsoft.com) for Internet Allow Access Policy destination, the Microsoft Update website will still display error message. It only works after I did no. 2 above I've mentioned before. So it really concerns me, because everyone now can access anywhere in internet from their workstations IE. How is the right way to use Domain Name Sets for Allowed Sites Access, but still able the ISA Server itselves to update at Microsoft Update website??? And now after I've installed WSUS with BITS v2.0 in ISA Server, it will not works if I use Domain Name Sets for Allowed Sites Access too...! Thus now I have to set the Internet Allow Access Policy destination to External. Where exactly did I do wrong in ISA Server Firewall Policy settings??? Thanks in advance.

The ISA Server as WSUS server too, what's the matter? Is it wrong to do so? Please be noted that I use Win SBS 2003.

Sorry At first I thought you were having problems with ISA being a WU client. I know nothing about getting WSUS server working on ISA.

How about using ISA Server 2004 with OWA, and publish OWA to internet users? Perhaps you could show me some important points about this matter? Thanks.

95% of most of the issues with ISA and SBS can be solved with one thing: RUN THE CONNECT TO INTERNET WIZARD. I cannot stress enough that if you have a SBS box with ISA on it you just go to the To Do list, click on Connect to Internet and run the wizard. There is a step by step paper on how to set up WSUS on SBS Download details: Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Started with Microsoft Windows Server Update Services on Windows Small Business Server 2003: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=28c43d57-2e15-47b2-9a6f-1514aa3ed05f&displaylang=en

I did the connect to internet wizard through the to do list. But the main issue is that I use only single adapater for LAN, and dial-up USB connection modem for internet connection. That's why the ISA Server 2004 can't properly implemented. Of course I've already checked first the TechNet MSDN website for articles on configuring SBS and ISA Server 2004. All the configuration requires two network adapter/NIC in order for the ISA Server 2004 to run with full functionality. That's why I have real hard time configuring ISA Server 2004 with Single Adapter, but still needing VPN feature in order to connect to local ISP.

This will never work. SBS doesn't support USB modems. Get a supported modem or subscribe to DSL.

I presume by dialup you mean PPPoE. If so, get a DSL router that offloads PPPoE from ISA and connect to it over an ethernet NIC.

To 'ababinchak' a.k.a. amy: Not everyone gets the best or better internet connection even in this modern times, for instance is like my situation here; there is no DSL or cable internet. We rely on dial-up, GPRS or CDMA internet connection only. But we refuse to stay left behind on getting and get beaten by the latest softwares technology, specially like ISA Server 2004 that can secure our server. Thanks for your suggestion, but we'll keep on looking for better solution.

To LLigetfa, I'm sorry but I don't quite get yet to what's the meaning of 'PPPoE', perhaps something like 'Power over Ethernet' modem or router? But what happened if I use DSL router and ISA Server 2004 recognize it as the external NIC to connect to internet? The ISA Server 2004 will protect the NIC address, but the truth is that I use USB dial-up modem to connect to internet. Does the ISA Server 2004 will protect that USB dial-up modem as well? Thanks for your help & attention.

You should be able to get a router between you and that USB modem or stick some PPPoE software on there. www.smallbizserver.net click on network setups and find the one regarding the PPPoE, they point to some third party software there.

And btw you can do a loopback nic and 'trick' isa. Check out Dr. Shinder's "colo" ISA articles. Same concept. You'll lose wizards... but...

To sam_hunter: hmm... I don't think I'll use third party PPPoE software, because I don't want to install unnecessary softwares at the server, might harm the Windows' registry system. I'm still looking for a router that has a USB connection, perhaps you know such device? And thanks for the link, I'll try to get more help from there. About this article by Tom Shinder, could you please pin-point me at the exact link/URL? Thanks for your help, appreciate it.
