I tried to create a Exchange service in Outlook 2000 with the wrong user name and password. After about six atempts the ISA stopped serving request for outgoing and incoming web request. What is wrong and why does this keep happening? I thought the ISA server was supposed to stop attacks which it does but it also stops all traffic inside and outside my network. Is this by design it can't be as of right now the ISA server is becoming a very big headach. I am rebooting my ISA server once every two or three hours to make it keep serving the web site and email clients. I have SP1 installed for the ISA server and SP2 for W2k server. It does not log anything when it stops responding it just stops responding.
help please

Hi Morph,
Some possibilities:
1. A major configuration error
2. You're using PPPoE
3. You're running ISA on a DC
4. You're running some other service on the ISA Server
5. DNS is not configured correctly on the ISA Server interfaces
Are you trying to access an internal or external Exchange server?
Thanks!
Tom

Hey Tom thanks for getting back to me. I am not using PPoE the ISA server is installed as a stand alone ISA server. The only thing the ISA server is running is ISA. DNS is configured properly it will serve request but fail after a day or so. I think I am getting hit hard with DOS attacks or things of that nature. I know they have not been able to get into my ISA serever and delete content but I know they are knocking on the door everyday until the ISA server dies. I called Microsoft when I first installed ISA and spoke to a a tech that went through my network configuration including DNS so I think I have that right. I am at wits end as it seems that when a attack is thrown at the ISA server it locks up like the article described in the the link below:
http://www.infoworld.com/articles/hn/xml/01/04/17/010417hnisa.xml?0417tupm
it is the closest desciption I have found on the problem I am having. If you need any other information please get back to me and I will give you anything you may need to help me. I do have SP1 for the ISA server installed.
Regards

Hi Morph,
Have you looked at the packet filter logs? Do they show some kind of attack?
Are you publishing a DNS server?
Thanks!
Tom

Hi Morph,
Another thing. I power management enabled on any of the NICs? How about QoS?
Thanks!

Good morning Tom:
I am not publishing a DNS server. I am publishing a Exchange server and have also configured web publishing for the web site. Should I be publishing the web server with server publishing instead? Tuesday after rebooting ISA I opened a browser on the ISA server and left it open. So far the site - www.marduke.net - and access out to the internet has been up for the past two days without rebooting the ISA server.
I have all power managment turned off in windows but I am not sure about the BIOS settings. I will be able to check that and the logs on Friday when I get back in CT. I do know I have seen port scans in Event Viewer. I thought Event Viewer would show all of the attacks then once an attack happened I would consult the logs is this not correct?
On the external nic I have enabled the QoS and IP everything else on that nic is NOT checked. Should I disable the QoS also? For internal clients I use my DNS to resolve names and for external request I use my ISP's DNS servers could this be a problem also?
Regards

Hi Morph,
You just need to disable power management on the NICs, the rest of the server is OK.
Try disabling QoS and see what happens.

Hi Tom,
I would like to take this time to say thank you for the help. It is nice to know there is help when you get stuck with a product. When I return home on Friday I will disable the power managment and give it a try. Sometimes I feel like such an ass that should of been the first place I looked. I will also play with the QoS settings.
Thanks Again
Morph
