I've just applied a certificate to a web site that i'm publishing and just wanted to know the following:
  • How can I test to see if its working correctly
  • How can I i found out what it is encrypting

Also, I do have the padlock icon in the address bar (IE7)

Hello,

Sorry to almos hijack you thread but I also wanted to know how to properlly test the SSL certificate.
In my case testing the rule with "test rule" outputs a clear *OK* but when I try to connect a client to the site it either times out or more often gives a connection problem or site not found or something along those lines. Mine is a visual sourcesafe site operating in the default port, mapping the external "/" to "SourceSafe/VssService.asmx".

Does the client need to have the certificate already installed? Can't he be shown the "certificate ahead! message in the web browser" ?

Oh well.. This was one of those times were I should have thought 2 secs more before posting. Turns out I completly overlooked my router port forwarding. So basically disregard what I've posted earlier.

Cheers!

Getting back to the original question, if you see the padlock, then SSL is working.  If you click on the padlock you will see the name of the certificate that is being used to ensure that it is the one you installed.  If you want all traffic to be secured then you need to ensure that your web publishing rule is configured correctly to do so.

SSL with ISA encrypts the traffic from the browser on the client machine to the ISA server which decrypts it, inspects it, and then passes it along to the internal web server that serves up the page.  Best practice is to have the internal server also only use HTTPS so that all traffic between ISA and the web server will be encrypted.
