We have a router at 163.1.19.254 and our network runs from 163.1.18.1 - 163.1.19.254. The ISA server is setup as:

Int net card: IP 163.1.18.250, Subnet 255.255.254.0, Gateway N/A, DNS 163.1.18.255.

Ext net card: IP - 163.1.18.255, Subnet 255.255.254.0, Gateway 163.1.19.254, DNS 129.67.1.180.

Physically, the router connects to the ISA ext card and the int card connects to an unmanaged hub which connects to the rest of the internal network.

All clients (400) are configured to use their assigned static IPs within the internal network limits and use the 163.1.19.254 gateway address. However, with the introduction of the ISA server, they will now need to be configured to point to the new gateway address (the int net card of the ISA server). Do I really have to go around chainging each machine or can I get the ISA server to be transparent and allow machines to find the external router?

Many thanks for help in advance. Oh, I tried to buy your book, but apparently they are out of stock at Amazon!

Hi Ben,

That's an interesting question. I know that Win2k supports a router discovery protocol, but I haven't looked into the specific of that. That might be one way to get around changing the IP addresses of the clients.

Thanks for trying to get the book. It is completed and should be out in a coupleof weeks.

OK, I am now having trouble as my internal network card IP address (163.1.18.250) is on the same address range as my external one (163.1.18.255).

ISA Internal Card:

IP - 163.1.18.250
Mask - 255.255.254.0
Gateway and DNS - N/A

ISA External Card:

IP - 163.1.18.255
Mask - 255.255.254.0
Gateway - 163.1.19.254
DNS - 129.67.1.180

I have the LAT looking like:

163.1.18.1 - 163.1.18.254
163.1.19.0 - 163.1.19.253

Allow all is set as you prescribe within Access Policies, however, I cannot get an internal client to ping the ISA external card or Gateway. It will ping the ISA Internal Card though.

Client card:

IP - 163.1.18.248
Mask - 255.255.254.0
Gateway - 163.1.18.250

I am getting fairly upset now and feel I am missing something fundamental.

Ben.
