We are running WSS 3.0 behind ISA 2006 SP1. We are using Forms Based authentication on the Listener which passes Kerberos to the SharePoint site.

Users with Office 2003 SP2/SP3 can only open documents as Read-Only (note the documents open with read/write access the very first time one is opened but all subsequent attempts result in the Read-Only issue). If they close the document without closing Office and then reopen using the recent items list the document opens with read/write access.

I have discovered that if I delete the following reg key on the user workstation, the document will open with read/write access from SharePoint until I close out of Office and try to open it again from SharePoint. All subsequent access attempts result in it opening as Read-Only.
“HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Internet\Server Cache”
Note the ISA logs look different when this key exists vs. when it has been deleted. When the Server Cache key exists there are requests from client agent “Microsoft Data Access Internet Publishing Provider Protocol Discovery” and a couple extra “MSFrontPage/6.0” requests. Note there are no issues weather this key exists or not if the document is opened directly from Office.

This problem has been reported before and the recommended solution was to enable persistent cookies but that is not an option in our environment as we have multiple users accessing confidential information on the same workstation user profile.

Any ideas?

If your client machines are Windows Vista then you might wanna look at http://blog.msfirewall.org.uk/2008/07/problems-accessing-office-documents.html

Check http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870853 as well

We are using XP Pro SP2 & Win 2K SP4 and both are experiencing the issue so unfortunately the first solution doesn't help.

I've tried the second KB article with no success, I'm pretty sure this is for users so they don't have to click "Edit in Excel/Word".
