Has anyone ever received this error when running the Enterprise edition schema updater: "Format of the specified computer name is invalid"The computer name I used is "GREGMCDC1". It is a Windows 2000 DC running SP1.

I've seen that happen when the computer name and the domain name are the same. Haven't seen it documented anywhere, though. Tom ------------------ Tom Shinder http://www.isaserver.org/shinder/

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately my netbios domain name is CORP. I thought at first the problem could be that I have a numeral in my name but I found someone who used the computer name HOME and had the same problem. I'll keep researching it. Greg

Hi Greg, Thanks for the update. Is the array name the same as the domain name? I guess not if you used the default array name, which would be the computer name, which is not the same as the domain name :-) I'll keep a lookout for this as well. If you find anything, please post it and I'll do the same. Thanks! Tom ------------------ Tom Shinder http://www.isaserver.org/shinder/

After letting my ISA server sit around for a few days I was finally able to run the schema updater. I had originally tried to run it right after running DCPROMO. Maybe there is a connection there. Someone with the same problem said that if he disabled his external interface he was able to run the updater. He just reenabled it after that and everything worked fine. There may be an issue with which NIC is first in the binding order. Check to see if your external interface is first in the binding order. If it is, make it second, or disable the interface when you run the updater.

I'll try it out and see if it works, my setup is only one computer with a 3Com card using a static ip. Have no internal network.. only at home . This computer is only for a web server and to put up a proxy so I can use ICQ at work.

Do you have a domain controller on your network? If not, you will not be able to run the schema updater. Make sure the ISA server is a DC or a member of the domain and that you are logging in as the domain admin (domain admin of the root domain). Check your binding order. If the external interface is first, make it last and make the internal first. Hope that helps. P.S.: DCPROMO is the wizard you run to promote a server to a domain controller. Your system may be a DC if you let the "Setting up your Server" wizard make it a DC>

I found my problem with this error was that I had a second interface in the machine which I wasn't using was not disabled. Once I disabled it, it worked fine. Hope this helps someone.
