I recently changed our ISA2004 (2003 SP1) logging from text file to SQL. Now the Firewall service stops and and I get the following error several times a day:-

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Microsoft Firewall
Event Category: Log
Event ID: 6
Date: 9/22/2005
Time: 9:07:14 AM
User: N/A
Computer: <servername>
The Microsoft Firewall failed to log information to ODBC Data Source Firewalldb, Table: FirewallLog, under User Name [<username>]. The ODBC Error description is: [State=01004][Error=0][Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Fractional truncation [State=01000][Error=10054][Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionRead (recv()). [State=08S01][Error=11][Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]General network error. Check your network documentation. .

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Has anyone seen this before? Also is it normal for the Firewall service to stop if it cannot connect to the SQL server?

Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your perspective, the default configuration for ISA Server is to take itself completely offline if it cannot log. There is a way to disable this, but I don't have the time to look it up right now, sorry. [Frown]

One option is to not have the service stop if logging fails.

This is not a perfect solution but an option -

Under monitoring/alerts select Configure Alerts Defnitions.
Then select "log failures" and choose edit.

On that page deselect the "stop selected service".
