This proceedure is certainly not 2004 specific, but I'm trying to set up hirerachical caching from a 2004 ISA server (downstream) and a ISA 200 server (upstream). I don't particularly want to use bridging for SSL as I don't want to have to worry about certificates (although a realise I may have no choice "[Frown]" ). What I would like to know is - is it possible to tunnel SSL connections through both of the web proxy services? or do I have to use bridging with certificates? If I can tunnel, I'd really appreciate some pointers on what to do..

Cheers,

Leon.

Hi Leon,

By default, hierarchical caching will do SSL to HTTP bridging, because the connections are proxied, not just NAT'd.

Since the connection between the download and upstream Web Proxy is tunneled inside an HTTP header on TCP port 8080, there's no way to do what you're seeks unless you perform SSL to SSL bridging.

However, PKI is quite easy. Just check out any of the ISA 2000 and upcoming ISA 2004 Deployment Kits. I've spent a lot of time trying to make certificates easier to deploy. And they are! Just try it an see [Smile]

HTH,
Tom

Thanks again for the reply Tom [Smile]

I thought I'd be stuck with certs.. I've read the section in 'ISA Server and Beyond' That covers this and it does look reasonably easy.

Thanks for the help!

Leon.

Hi Leon,

You bet! I'll include a section in the ISA 2004 book on how to implement SSL to SSL for hierarchical caching. Its pretty fun to see it work [Smile]

Thanks!
Tom
