We have set up ISA2004 Ent Edition. We have a Domain Server that has the Configuration Storage Server installed. We have W2K3 SP1 in a workgroup with ISA2004 installed and we have set up communication using certificates as described in the MS documentation. Although we are sure we had it working at one time, we are now in the position of having no problem with the CSS applying changes to the ISA Server however it is unable to retrieve any information from the ISA Server (MMC has a nice banner at the top - "Unable to retrieve data from: myisaserver".

Investigations have turned up a couple of things that may be related - ISA Server App Log contains Warning message MSSQL$MSFW Event Id 19011. The firewall logs on myisaserver contain a FWX_E_ABORTIVE_SHUTDOWN for some communication from CSS using MS Firewall Control (port 3847) although other similar traffic appears to be allowed.

Where can I look to try and work out what is happening here?

Do you already have this hotfix installed?

Microsoft ISA Server 2004 Enterprise Edition Update for Configuration Storage server connectivity using certificate authentication

Monitoring of the ISA Server is performed over RPC that is authenticated with the Mirrored account so it's a possibility.

I hit the same problem as described here. A bit difference in config, I have 2 array members both on same domain as configuration storage server. It was working 100% and then once there was this error.

Haven't tried any fixes yet.

EDIT: And if I open the management mmc from array member, there's no error message, everything happy and green.

Hi Chris,

I'm getting the same error from my CSS server only, and get no error when viewing ISA Management from the array member.

I did make changes to the configuration from both CSS servers and from the array members and the changes appear to be replicating without problems.

My servers are all in the same domain, however the CSS's are stored on domain controllers which have windows firewall running on them --- I'm betting there is an ISA monitoring port or sometihng which is being blocked on the domain controllers.

If you are running in a workgroup or different domains though I'd bet you need to install the hotfix mentioned above.
