Configuration:
ISA 2004
Windows SharePoint Services
ISA publishing WSS over SSL using Basic Auth

Everything seems to be working fine except that I cannot upload files to a document library. I have already removed the Verify Normalization and Block High Bit Characters checkboxes because they cause issues with WSS sites. When I try to upload it looks like everything has worked and I get the document library list back but the file is not there. I watched the traffic using the monitor on ISA and the only traffic between the client and ISA is a successful POST of the upload.aspx page and the subsequent GET of the allitems.aspx page for the listing. Anyone know what I need to do here? Thanks in advance.

Hi Joseph,

It might be the HTTP filter, but we haven't worked otu the details yet with SPS and the 2004 ISA firewall.

Tom,

One of your legendary articles on how to configure SPS 2003 behind ISA Server 2004 would be a very welcome site. [Smile] Until then I have to keep ISA Server 2000 around. [Frown]

Thanks.

I am facing exactly the same issue with ISA2004/SPS2003. I am able to access all the sites, but cannot upload any files.

It really seems that the various product teams within Microsoft don't talk to one another.

This (along with the constant VPN-hanging problem that I have) means we will most like roll back to ISA2000 on Win2k. (retro, and a troublesome UI, but it seemed to work OK once it got going).

Cheers
Olaf

I happen to be a corporate customer with PSS support so I have been able to open a ticket on this and if I get a resolution on this I will post it for everyone else.

Hi Olaf,

Did the Hotfix from PSS solve the VPN problem for you?
Thanks!

Hi Joseph,

If you write to me privately at tshinder@isaserver.org I might be able to get you a leg up on this.

Thanks!

Thanks.

I am pleased to say that I have some valuable information for everyone. The below information has been approved for release to the community by both the ISA and WSS product teams at MS.

There is a known issue with asymmetrical SSL publishing of WSS servers. By this, I mean that one side is SSL and the other is not in the ISA publishing rule. The only configuration that will work is that both sides of the connection must be SSL. This is an issue with the Microsoft products, the product groups are aware of it, and will be addressing the issue in a future release or service pack for the products. I do not know when that might be nor whether both products are affected or only one of them.

I can tell you that I have proven in my environment that by using a symmetric SSL publishing configuration my site is working just fine for WSS and file uploads.

I have to give thanks to Tom who helped me work with Microsoft on this issue. Once again, the power of the community working together is proven.

This may have been covered already but I could not find it - I am hosting sharepoint sites on a colocated server using the ISA 2k4 setup described on this site in another article. I have the same problem uploading documents - the HTTP filter gets in the way. These are HTTP sites - no SSL - and my only solution right now is to turn off the HTTP filter. Is their a solution for this situation that allows me to turn the HTTP filter back on and still allow my clients to upload documents to their sites.

Thanks,
Art

Joseph,

Thanks for the SSL information. I can verify that this does indeed work.

Just to add on: I had (past tense, thank goodness) the same problem with document uploads, spent days on the phone with Microsoft tech support, and finally got it resolved by publishing through symmetrical SSL. We never could get it to work through non-SSL, but my Microsoft tech support guy said that he knew someone else had gotten it to work that way (through non-SSL). Just a little FYI.

Also, props to everyone on this site. This is the greatest thing since sliced bread!

It seems this topic refers to uploading documenst to a WSS site thru ISA. What about no being able to upload to an intranet WSS site? All I get is a page not found after waiting for a long time, or a prompt for credentials that are never accepted. Any ideas on this?

Hi,

I am quite new to this: can someone explain what is symmetric SSL publishing and how can I configure this?

TIA

By symmetric SSL I mean that the ISA box is configured to require SSL from the browser hitting ISA and it communicates with the WSS server over SSL also. Microsoft has released an updated version of their ISA and Sharepoint configuration document on microsoft.com that now covers ISA 2004 configuration also.

As mentioned above, one issue also seems to be the http filter. We are using ISA2004 Standard an Windows Sharepoint Services with SP1 and MS05-006 patch. We are using SSL in a SSL to Browser, plain html to webserver scenario.

When we try to publish data to a Sharpoint Website with Windows Explorer, there is a 500 error from ISA or the explorer crashes. When we do the same from Office (Word and Powerpoint tested) everything works fine, data is published to the server. So this could be an issue with the Explorer DAV implementation and not SSL bridging.
