Hi, all! I've got a problem with ISA 2004. 1. I can't see uptime for Firewall service on Services tab of Monitoring section. 2. When I try to apply any configuration changes an error "The configuration changes were saved to storage, but at least one service failed to load these changes. See the event log for detailes" appear. 3. Looks like Firewall service doesn't work indeed because all packets are dropped and any rules are ignored. Is it problem of beta version or I've obtained wrong copy? I've downloaded an installation from Microsoft site.
Thanks. Mykhaylo

Hi Mykhaylo,
Sounds like there was a problem with the installation. You might try uninstalling and reinstalling, or wait for the RTM, which shouldn't be very long!

I've tried to reinstall ISA and Windows at all about 5 times. This didn't help. Well... the thought to wait for RTM is good, but I'd like to test it before buying... Anyway did you have any problems with ISA 2004 Beta 2 + Windows 2003 Server Standard? Thanks.

Hi Mykhaylo,
You can download it today from the www.microsoft.com/isaserver site.

I've downloaded today and installed ISA 2004. Firewall service doesn't show uptime. Look like white cross on red mark and "????". No changes are applied. I've tried to change Firewall log configuration - there was no result. In event log I've found one suspicious event:
Event Type: Error Event Source: Microsoft Firewall Event Category: None Event ID: 14147 Date: 14.07.2004 Time: 11:16:11 User: N/A Computer: SCREW Description: ISA Server detected routes through adapter "wan" that do not correlate with the network element to which this adapter belongs. The address ranges in conflict are: 0.0.0.1-126.255.255.255;128.0.0.0-192.167.255.255;192.168.1.0-192.168.64.255;192.168.65.8-192.168.65.254;192.168.66.0-223.255.255.255;240.0.0.0-255.255.255.254;. Fix the network element and/or the routing table to make these ranges consistent; they should be in both or in neither. If you recently created a remote site network, check if the event recurs. If it does not, you may safely ignore this message.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Does affect my problems? Thanks.

I've found out a thing. When I create a firewall rule apply it and then restart Firewall service, it works. But without restarting the service rule doesn't work.

Hi Mykhaylo,
Do you have two or more NICs in the ISA firewall?
Thanks! Tom

It's strange, but after one more reinstall of Windows and ISA it works :-) Thank you.

Mykhaylo, you are not the only one who has had this problem. I too am experiencing the same issue. The first time I ran into this problem, I was upgrading from ISA 2000 to ISA 2004. I thought that it may be an issue with the upgrade process, so I reinstalled windows 2003 server and ISA 2004. Same problem is occurring. My configuration is as follows: 2 nics, 1 external with a default route to the gateway, 1 internal (192.168.x.x) with no gateway. The only things installed on this system are windows 2003 server enterprise, all windows updates, active directory, dns, dhcp, norton av 9.0 enterprise, and ISA 2004 server standard (MSDN). The problem occurs right from a fresh install, no configuration required. I really don't want to reinstall 5 more times to get it working like Mykhaylo did, and restarting the service everytime I make a change isn't a great option either. Please help!

Sounds funny, but I've got the same problem again. This happened after I've added one more IP address to external NIC. Reinstalling of ISA didn't help. Now I'm gonna to reinstall Windows again :-(

I suppose that the multiple ip address thing could be my problem as well, my public interface has 2 ip addresses, so I can forward traffic to different servers using the same port. This behavior was allowed on ISA 2000, but I suppose that there may be a bug with this on 2004. Guess I'll reinstall windows, etc., and find out.

Hey guys,
I'll check this out, but I suspect there is a configuration problem with the addresses assigned for your "Internal" network.
Can you give the exact details of the IP addresses assigned to the "Internal" network?
Thanks! Tom

I reinstalled my box, this time without the second ip address on the public interface, and the same problem occurred. As for my private addresses, I have had it set to just my internal network (192.168.30.0/24) and have tried it with all ietf designated private networks, neither setting seemed to make a difference. Getting it to work was taking too long, so we've decided to switch to another solution, which is working for us. Best of luck to those who have this problem and those who are fixing it.

Hi Jason,
I think you should give the ISA firewall a better test, at least get it configured correctly so you can test it!
Were you assigning public addresses to the external interface?
Thanks! Tom

I've reinstalled Windows, but problem remains the same. I suspect the point is in MSDE. The service MSSQL$MSFW is started, but it's impossible to connect to this server using MS SQL Server Manager. Any ideas?

Installation of MSDE is defined when you installing the ISA. I din't select that checkbox, didn't get MSDE installed (no such service at all), but I ran into the same error. Problem seems to be elsewhere.

Hey guys,
I've tested this one 7 machines now! Added multiple public addresses on the external interface and no problems. I never need to restart the machine or restart the ISA firewall's services. I can create listeners, no errors appear, no problems at all.
I'd love to get some exact details on this configuration that are not working.
BTW -- the MSDE logging was used on all of these machines.
HTH, Tom

Wondering how do I get multiple external ip, when I got only one given by inet provider.
Tried to add dummy ip, didn't help - get the same problem (apply doesn't work). But sessions tab working now.
my config is: internal net: 192.168.168.103, mask 255.255.255.0, gateway: empty ext.net: 192.168.250.7, mask: 255.255.255.0, gateway: 192.168.250.1.
Internal net in ISA descibed as: 192.168.168.0-192.168.168.255. Version of ISA is 2004, final.
