Is it possible to install ISA Server 2006 on SBS 2003 (not R2) to provide web proxy services only through a uni-homed configuration?

The release notes for SBS 2003 R2 Premium state that ISA Server 2006 cannot be installed (as there is some interaction with management tools designed for ISA Server 2004), but I am unable to find information relating to non-R2 SBS 2003 and ISA 2006.

It's possible, but you'll open up a can of worms.

Thanks for that. I was thinking that would probably be the case :) There is a second (non-SBS) Win2k3 server in the domain, so I think the recommendation would be to install it there instead.

Hi,

just make sure to NOT install other services (e.g. DNS, DHCP, DC...) on this new ISA machine.

Paulo Oliveira.

Seeing as the original server is SBS I think that's a moot point..

The second box has SQL Server 2005 Express; will ISA 2006 use this automatically, rather than its own MSDE?

Hi Steve,

the SBS server is designed to have a bunch of services running on one machine.

The new installation is not, thatīs why I recommended not to install anything besides ISA.

@mmelbourne, IMHO itīs ok install SQL express.

Regards,
Paulo Oliveira.

The documentation I've seen walks through the process of upgrading an ISA-installed MSDE instance to SQL/SQL Express (off-box, if required). If SQL Express is there already, will ISA 2006 use it, and not try to install MSDE (which presumably can't co-exist with SQL Express on the same box).

It's a different server he's putting ISA on. The SBS will be protected by it.

The setup should recognise that SQL Express is installed already & use it.

Many thanks. I just might try it in a VM beforehand, in case there are any surprises! :)

Cheers,

Matt

Hi Steve,

when I said "new installation", I meant new server installation. Obviously I misspelled

I think now weīre talking about the same stuff.

Paulo Oliveira.
