I'm also testing ISA 2004. I also read the "get up and running with ISA s 2004 beta2" by Tom ,and followed this article .Now I can ping my isp dns server , and my isa server can view external web site , but internal clients can't view external web site.
My clients also can ping my isp dns server, I found this problem is dns resolve , my clients can't resolve dns name via isa server:
1. use ping dns_name , prompt " unknown host "
2. use nslookup , prompt "no response from server"
(My clients DG and DNS server is isa internal interface)
So I check firewall policy in isa,but the "DNS from Internal Network " policy is work well.
I'm puzzled , could anybody help me ?

Hi Meibo,

The ISA firewall should be sending queries to a public DNS server, as the ISA DNS server is a caching only DNS server. Are you using your ISP as a forwarder?

hi , tom
I know ISA will forward the dns query to isp dns server , but where can set the dns forwarding in ISA 2004 ?
I had resolved the problem in this way yesterday : I made ISA server as a DNS cached server(use windows 2k3 dns service) . My question is that , tom : in your article , you didn't build a dns server , but ISA can forward dns query . This made me puzzled.

Hi Meibo,

OK, I must have got confused with the ISA2004 Quick Start Guide that I'm writing now. In the guide that I'll put out in a couple of weeks, I'll recommend that you install a caching only DNS server on the ISA firewall.
