MEMORY ALLOCATION FOR MSDE - 6.Dec.2005 3:50:28 PM

Currently the MSDE process is taking up 1.5 GB of RAM, I checked the allocated memory and is set to the default (2147483647).
What is the recommended amount of memory that should be allocated for MSDE?
In the next few months there will be about 1000 users going through the ISA server. It's only used as a Proxy Server.
Would it make a big difference if a change the web proxy logging to W3c format instead of MSDE??

Hi, the same here.. Use SQL Server 2000 and ISA 2004 Enterprise on same server.
Currently 1.5 GB ram resource only for mssql process, although I have disabled SQL server from services. It runs only the mssql$ for ISA..
any suggestions?

Well... if those two links are not enough, one could always use the board search on something as simple as memory msde and get all the threads that have discussed this time and time again.

I had the same problem. MSSQL$MSFW was causing memory threshold alerts (monitoring via NetIQ). I changed the logging method to W3C file format in an effort to stop ISA from using MSDE. Admitting my ignorance, is the MSSQL@MSFW service necessary if I'm not logging to an MSDE database? Microsoft Firewall and SQLAgent$MSFW are both shown as dependencies on this service. Can I disable the service? or will it cause the Firewall not to start? I was guessing that since I'm not logging to an MSDE database, I could solve the memory issue without limiting the amount of memory that the service hogs. Thoughts? Comments?

Hi William,

You can remove the SQL logging service by rerunning setup from the Add/Remove Programs applet and removing the Advanced Logging feature.

Hello:

If you want an easier way to display/edit the amount of memory MSDE can use, get the script named "ISA_MSDE_Max_Memory.vbs" from www.ISAscripts.org. It doesn't require OSQL.EXE and has just a couple simple command-line switches.

By the way i have decided to leave ISA Server free to have so much memory because:

While this may be considereed scope creep, I capped my MSDE because I was having problems trying to allocate RAM cache.

I never did get a clear answer on the board and I cannot remember the details of what I tried. I don't recall now whether MSDE trumps RAM cache.

Hi Les,

Runs great. I almost never see my MSDE process run higher than 60MB. I don't know why it *seems* to go haywire on some boxes. I've never seen any of those boxes in person, so I haven't had a chance to troubleshoot the issue.
