ISA has a built-in viewer for MSDE.  It also generates reports from them.  You can also convert MSDE to text with utilities.
Notepad will read the text versions but you would be much happier with one of the many w3c log readers/reporting tools available.

Hello Ligetfa,
How do you use the built-in viewer for MSDE?  I tried double-clicking the .ldf file and Windows needs me to associate and application to read the .ldf extension files.

What does MSDE stand for?

How do I get a w3c log reader/reporting tool?

Newbie Cliff

Thanks!

The logs are viewed from within the ISA MMC console, not by clicking on the files.  You can formulate queries with a variety of filters.

MSDE = MicroSoft Data Engine = a free limited version of SQL.

It sounds to me that you are logging to MSDE so you would need to use the utility to export MSDEtoText.

I haven't tried the tool but I think it exports to w3c format.  Google for w3c log viewer and go from there.

Some people prefer to log to w3c format directly rather than constantly convert from MSDE.  If you do that, the log viewer in the ISA MMC will no longer work.
