Hi!
Im trying to establish a connection to a remote MS SQL Server with SQL Enterprise manager on my Secure NAT Client.

I've created a protocol definition for outbound TCP connections using port 1433. I've also defined a secondary connection within the port range of 2000 to 2050 (outbound TCP). The protocol rule that applies to my secure nat client is set up to allow the protocol definition described above.

However, when I try to register the remote SQL Server i get a "timeout expired" message.

So my question is if someone can come up with an idea whats wrong .... I would really appreciate your kind hints....

Hi Mikel,

Try installing the Firewall Client on the machine and see if that helps.

In order to make this work I had to provide a IP name (That can be resolved by DNS lookup into an IP Address)instead of the IP-address when registering the SQL Server in Enterprise Manager. This sounds very strange but SQL Enterprise Manager tries to resolve the given IP-adress into an IP-address which will fail of course. The solution to this problem was delivered to me by Microsoft Support.

Now it works just fine.

Regards
Mikel

Microsoft has announced that they'll make a kb-article covering the problem described above. Q299673 will be released 10-14 days from today.
