Hi,

I'm experiencing a weird problem from some XP Pro workstations that I hope comes down to being a bug.

I have blown away my ISA 2000 server at home and reinstalled it with ISA 2004 Beta. It's all working fine accept for two of my XP Professional workstations cannot connect to my ISP's POP3 server and download e-mail. The policy is fine, and everything works from my XP laptop.

I get the standard Outlook timeout error which is documented in several MS documents.

I've tried using Outlook Express, Outlook 2002 and Outlook 2003, all of which fail.

I've done a full Windows Update on all workstations, including updates for Office.

I can successfully telnet to the POP3 server and list my mail that way, but before I put ISA 2000 back on, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on things to try.

All machines are running as Secure NAT Clients, but I've also tried them with the Firewall Client.

The weird thing is that it works fine from my work laptop, which is the same version OS, etc as my home machines.

Cheers,
Jeremy.

Hi Jeremy,

Are you using a DSL connection? Could this be an MTU issue?

What happens if you extend the timeout for the POP3 connection?

Thanks!
Tom

Hi Tom,

Yes it is a DSL connection.

In Outlook 2003 I increased the server timeout to 3 minutes. Still got the following error...

Task 'thejhouse - Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Then, after doing some MTU testing, I set the MTU to 1452 and the TCP Receive Window to 8712.

Now it is all working perfectly.

You are a champion. Thank you very much.

I'm confused why this was working okay with ISA 2000. Could this be a bug with ISA 2004 Beta? If so, can I report it to someone.

Cheers,
Jeremy.

Hi Jeremy,

Great! Good to hear you got it working. MTU issues were common with ISA 2000 too. Not sure why you just started seeing it with ISA 2004.

Thanks!
Tom

I ended up removing the TCP Receive Window size and left it as default. So it definitely came down to MTU size.

Thanks Tom.

Regards,
Jeremy.

Hi Jeremy,

Just to clarify this for the hundreds of other people who run into the same problem in the future, on what machine did you change the MTU?

Thanks!
Tom

Tom,

I set the MTU size on the XP Pro workstation that runs Outlook 2003, and not the ISA Server.

In this situation it's a straight NAT, but I guess that if the ISA Server was proxying my request, I would change it there.

Cheers,
Jeremy.

Please note that this has now been fixed by Microsoft, so the workaround I posted in this thread can be ignored.

Cheers,
Jeremy.
