I just installed a new ISA2k4 server in parallel wth another ISA 2k4 server. The old isa2k4 server will be retired once I move all the services over to the new one.  The old ISA2k4 server is publishing my barracuda spam appliance for mail.  When I try and publish the barracuda through the new ISA2k4 server my inbound mail flow stops.  If I publish my Exchange 2k3 server (bypassing the barracuda) mail flow works fine both ways. Is there something I'm missing on the Barracuda? Or is the issue with ISA?

What GW is the barracuda using; the old ISA or the new?

The GW address on the Barracuda is the new ISA servers IP address.

Previously the GW address was the address of my router that is for my P2P T1 circuit that goes to one of my remote sites.

Is it possible the Barracuda is only accepting traffic from the internal IP of my old ISA server? (i'm not that clear on Barracuda. Sorry)

The setup is simple. I have an ISA Server in front of my internal network. The barracuda and exchange server reside on the internal network. If I publish exchange through ISA mail works fine except for the loads of SPAM that gets through. If I publish the barracuda for mail flow inbound mail flow stops.  I am not that familiar with Barracuda but there must be a setting in it that is only allowing it to accept SMTP connections from the old ISA server.

Hi There is no certain setting that says where it should accept mail from unless you specifically block ip addresses.
How is your rule set up on the ISA server?
Have you got your domains correctly configured?
Is the barracuda recieving mail check your message logs its on the 'Basic' page on the web config.
The Barracuda is very simple to install you just direct smtp to traffic and it does the rest
I remember reading this article a while ago which might help you. The article is for a DMZ setup it might give you some pointers

You could also try manually connecting to the barracuda and see if it works.

From you ISA server, run a command prompt and try these commands:

telnet <ip of barracuda> 25
helo
mail from:test@test.com
rcpt to:<your email address>
data
Test!
.

That is the basic SMTP structure that all mail uses. If you get any errors back, you won't be able to complete entering the commands, but it might help you locate the problem. Feel free to post the results here if problem persist.

tbone2k...I haven't tried the telnet yet. I will certainly give that a shot from my new ISA server.

itfcadmin...I read that article too and I just could not get mail to flow. I tried publishing the barracuda as a mail server using the mail server wizard and also just using a standard server publishing rule for SMTP Server.  It doesn't make much sense because mail is so simple. I will try the telnet and then doublecheck the barracuda settings.

Thanks.

Have you by any chance got your Barracuda running in out bound mode only?
from the main page go to Administration scroll down to the bottom and check operating mode
