Hi,
i'm publishing an SMTP server using a public IP x.x.x.x on isa server 2004; all traffic seems to proceed correctly, the smtp relay works fine. I've noticed that a lot of packets (40000 daily) are dropped for the traffic from Internet to the Ip x.x.x.x for the smtp protocol! If i publish this ip for smtp, why do i see these dropped packets ? What's wrong ?

thanks
regards

Hi Gianluca,

Check out this document on SMTP server publishing and other Exchange publishing. There is some helpful information regarding SMTP verbs that might solve your problem.

Hi Tom, i've checked my smtp application filter, but now all verbs are enabled, anyway i've applied the config 2 mentioned in the document.

However i've noticed the follwing error in every dropped packet:

0xc0040017 FWX_E_TCP_NOT_SYN_PACKET_DROPPED

i've read other cases (regarding this error) on the other forums, and i've tried to increase connection limit from 160 to 1000 (as you suggest), but the problem persists;
i'm now hosting basic mail and web services for some customers, one of them is a spam victim, he receives a lot of spam hourly; can this fact be a problem ?

thanks
regards
