We have the ISA 2004 RC installed on a standalone server with no other services. When we create an SMTP publishing rule, no listener is created on the external interface. We have checked with netstat -an and there is no port 25 listener bound on any interface. We are also not getting any conflicting port messages in the event viewer.

Is there supposed to be a listener created similar to those that get created on port 80 by a web publishing rule? If so any ideas how to fix it?

NETSTAT will show a port 25 listener if a rule is configured correctly.

In your server publishing rule properties the Networks page should list the IPs you are listening on. For an SMTP server it makes sense if this is limited to a selected IP on the 'External' network (use 'address' button).

Thanks for the response Paul.

When we create any server publishing rules of any type besides web publishing. We never get a listener created on the interfaces specified in the listeners configuration.

Any ideas why listeners wouldn't be created? We did do an upgrade from Beta2 to RC1 on these machines, could that have caused an issue?

Hi S,

Do you have two or more NICs install on this ISA firewall?

Thanks!
Tom

I am having the same issue. I have specifically published an exchange front end server on port 25 (SMTP SERVER).

If I configure a server publishing rule for any other port, the ISA server does not listen on that port either.

It is listening for SSL via the specifically defined web listener for OWA. OWA works fine.

Although I am not seeing anything via netstat -na I have downloaded fwengmon.exe from Microsoft and can see the following:

D:\isa_2003_Ent\fwe>fwengmon.exe
Creation Objects:
ID      Protocol  Source                Destination             One-Shot
--      --------  ------                -----------             --------
762     TCP(6)    0.0.0.0:0             10.84.55.132:80         No
763     TCP(6)    0.0.0.0:0             10.84.55.132:443        No
1       TCP(6)    0.0.0.0:0             10.84.55.132:1745       No
2       TCP(6)    0.0.0.0:0             10.84.55.132:8080       No
827     TCP(6)    0.0.0.0:0             10.84.55.142:25         No
826     TCP(6)    0.0.0.0:0             10.84.55.142:25         No
828     TCP(6)    0.0.0.0:0             10.84.55.142:25         No
829     TCP(6)    0.0.0.0:0             10.84.55.142:25         No
766     TCP(6)    0.0.0.0:0             127.0.0.1:80            No
767     TCP(6)    0.0.0.0:0             127.0.0.1:443           No
764     TCP(6)    0.0.0.0:0             [external IP]:80        No
765     TCP(6)    0.0.0.0:0             [external IP]:443       No
140     TCP(6)    10.84.55.132:0        10.84.55.136:1025       No
13 Creations.

I have published SMPT SERVER on all networks.

10.84.55.142 is the front end exchange server. I can telnet on port 25 from ISA to this address and send mail. If I try and telnet from the FE or BE servers to the ISA server on 25, it just closes the connection, as if it is not listening.

([external IP]: is the public IP of the mail server hidden from prying eyes.)
