I'd like to use an ISA server as a SMTP Relay but only use single net card. Is this possible, or even reasonable? The exch5.5 server is on the internal network. The ISA is in the DMZ. The idea is to remove the exch5.5 one layer further from the external network and use ISA's superior filtering etc. Comments?

Hi Dennis,

You could use the IIS SMTP and publish the internal interface and use it to relay to the internal network. I am wary of putting extra services on the ISA Server for security reasons, but if there are budgetary limitations, you certainly can do this.

You can create virtual servers on that SMTP server that only accept inbound mail for your users' domain, and configure it to drop all other mail. That way, the spammers get locked out. Make sure to configure it to use the internal mail server as a Smart Host to forward the mail that is destined to your domain to your internal mail server.

HTH,
Tom
