I configured our ISA 2004 following all of setup functions in the ISA Server book. I can send email out but when email comes back in it sits in the Queue on the smtp relay which is on the ISA server.

I looked in the event viewer and found: (SMTP Verb which caused the error is Mail The response from the remote server 454 5.7.3. Client does not have permission to submit mail to this server).

I know it deals with authencation but I have no idea where to tell my exchange server to its okay to have the ISA server send email to the exchange. Its my last step to complete in order to put the ISA server 2004 online.

Hi Will,

Is the Exchange Server configured to accept inbound relay from the ISA firewall for the appropriate remote domains?

Thanks!
tom

Thanks Tom for responding.

I gave the ISA SMTP server relay access on the default SMTP on exchange. I also gave it rights inside the user button. It still gives he the same error as before. Both servers run 2003 sp1. The exchange has 2003 sp1. I think its odd that OWA works fine but it does show the url twice.

If you are using the ISA server as the Smart Host you need to check the default SMTP Virtual Server properties in IIS. Under the Access tab that authentication allows anonymous access and connection accepts any connection. Also check your domain is listed correctly under this virtual server and that under it's porperties you forward mail to your Exchange server [Smart Host] and allow incoming mail to be relayed to this domain.

On the Exchange server itself you need to allow relaying and connection from your ISA Server. These can be set in the default SMTP Virtual Server in Exchange.

Also as an aside if you make any changes in IIS then I would restart IIS.

If you are still experiencing problems then I would do a monitor on the ISA Server to check that the mail is not being blocked.
