I have just installed SP3 for ISA 2004, hoping it might fix my publishing problem, but without much luck. It appears from the logs that my Array access rule to allow POP3 and SMTP traffic to traverse the firewall (I plan to lock it down later) is being processed. I can see connections in the log being initiated, and immediately closed with a result code of 0x80074e21. To me this says that my client is trying to initiate an SMTP session with the ISA Server, and closes it because there is no SMTP running on ISA. I also have a pair of Mail Server Publishing rules, which I set up with the Publish a Mail Server Wizard to forward POP3 and SMTP traffic onto me email server, which is in my DMZ. These publishing rules don't seem to be having any effect on the traffic, I see the same results in the log whether they're enabled or disabled: email traffic reaches the ISA Server, but doesn't then move on to the email server. Any suggestions?

To help, could you provide a little more information on your Internal network setup, published server ISA client configurations, etc.. It sounds possibly like a DNS issue but that is dependent on the need information. RB

Thanks for the response. The ISA Server has four Network Interfaces, one which is not yet connected, and one each for LAN, WAN and DMZ. The mail server I am trying to connect to is in the DMZ. I have an ADSL router connected to the WAN interface which provides internet connectivity. I can't see this being a DNS issue, as the publishing rule has the IP address of the mail server. I am able to route correctly from the ISA server to all the subnets it is connected to.

ISA client, how is the published mail server configured? Can you telnet from the ISA to the mail server over 110 and 25 and get a response?

Using a telnet console on the ISA Server, I am able to connect to port 25 on the mail server and send a test email to myself. I can also connect to port 110 and check the number of messages waiting in my mailbox. However, when sending SMTP or POP3 traffic to one of the interfaces on the ISA box, I am unable to create a connection. The ISA Server receives the traffic, but doesn't seem to know what to do with it.
