Hi,

I have an Exchange 2003 server behind an ISA 2004 server. Exchange 2003 is using the SMTP virtual server on ISA to relay its mail. Publishing rules are in effect (used the SMTP virtual server on ISA as a guide) and all incoming and outgoing mail works ok.

Problem is our organization needs to send pretty large emails. Maximum size is 10240 kB. Session size is now 3 times as large (Max messages/connections is 20). This goes for both the SMTP virtual server on ISA as for the one on Exchange.

Now sometimes we get large emails from a supplier (> 32MB) and this message keeps coming back in the log of the ISA server. ISA seems to reject the email, but the whole message is transferred, so 32 MB is transferred to our server. But no mail is delivered.

If I would increase the session size limit I would solve the problem for that particular email but maybe bigger connections get set up in the future. That's why the session size is this large already.

Is ISA not reporting correctly that only 10 MB emails may be sent? Why is the other server keep trying to send it's mail? Are there any guidelines for using the session size limit, apart from it must be equal to or bigger than the message size limit.

Interesting question. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer. [Smile]

I never thought of SMTP as a mechanism to send such large files, but I guess it works. I'd be interested to see what other people might have to say about this issue.

Hi Tom,

I temporarily disabled the session limit and of course the mail came through. I'm also very interested in the view of other people on what's best practice for using those limits.
