We have an ISA 2006 server setup to be used only as a Forward Proxy. We setup a department to use the proxy but when they are on the proxy, they can not open Microsoft Office documents on the network share, only documents local to the computer. I made sure that the bypass proxy settings for Local addresses was checked and I have tried filling things into the exceptions box but it didn't help. I'm not sure if this matters but everything works fine on my PC with the proxy settings enabled but I have domain admin rights on the network. If I turn off the proxy settings they can access the network files fine. I believe if the proxy settings are on and you let the computer try to open the network file for a long time, maybe 10 minutes, it will eventually open but still seems unstable. Any idea's why this is happening? It doesnt make sense to me why this is even an issue as it is not web traffic. Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Are the clients' browsers configured to use an autoconfiguration script, either manually or autodetect (WPAD)?

No, all settings are filled in on the client computer. This is done with a script, however even manually changing them causes the same problem.

Some new info. I still cannot get things to work but I thought of monitoring the IP address in the ISA Log monitoring of the computer accessing the network file. For some reason, it is trying to go through the ISA. I am getting entries for protocol http and http proxy with actions Failed Connection Attempt, Denied Connection, Closed Connection. The HTTP Method for these are OPTIONS and PROPFIND. The url that it lists is an internal one that is in the exclusions list. Any ideas?
