I 'm installing ISA 2004 Enterprise Edition to benefit from array and css in the DMZ. the two servers in the DMZ are both running AD.
I 've successfully installed and configured ISA on one of the servers. In the process of joining the second server to the array, I get the following error
"Set up failed to install ADAM in replica mode. (Acitve Directory could not create the NTDS settings object for this directory server CN=NTDS Settings, CN=name_of_the_server$ISASTGCTRL,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site-Name,CN=Sites,CN={79A....................................2F} o the remote directory server server1.co.uk:2171. Ensure the provided network credentials have sufficient permissions. Error code: 0x80072071 An attempt was mae to add an object to the directory with a name that is already in use".
The account used is a member of Domain Enterprise admin as well as Domain admins.
I would appreciate any help.

Hi Ibk,
What do you mean that they're running AD? They shouldn't be DCs, but should be *members* of the same AD domain, and the CSS should be on a member server in the same AD domain.
HTH, Tom

Hi Tom
Many thanks for your prompt reply.
Unfortunately, the organisation don't have the finances for a spare DC so are insisting we install on the DC.
An instance of ISA 2004 was installed on once DC a few weeks ago, but didn't work. This was then uninstalled and the DC was demoted to remove AD and then promoted once again. A second ISA server was then installed to join the array and I am now trying to replicate these settings onto the original DC.
It appears as if the settings of the first (uninstalled)instance of ISA 2004 is still retained somewhere as it still shows up in Active Directory. Each time I remove it, it appears again in Active Directory, and each time try to the second ISA Server settings attempt to replicate, it comes up with the error message I've posted.
In essence, is there any way I could permanently delete the settings of the (uninstalled) instance of ISA 2004, or install ISA Server on the DCs even though it is not Microsoft's preferred method.

Hi Ibk,
It might be possible to run the ISA firewall on a DC, but I've never done it, and I haven't seen it doc'd anywhere on how to do it securely (which probably isn't possible). This would be especially true in a ISA EE environment. If you see something somewhere that shows how to do this, let us know!
Thanks! Tom

Hi Fido, Is the CSS machine and all the ISA firewall array members part of the same domain? If so, first that first and try again. HTH, Tom

Hello, Tom. I have 2 ISA array, which have 4 node in 1 domain. ISA servers are not DC. two isa servers in one array are CSS. I have switched off one CSS and trying to install another ISA + CSS and I receive error above. When I rename machine, I can install CSS for 1-st attempt. If installation was terminated and I begin install process again - i receive error. After I this attempts to install CSS I have warning in ADAM log The attempt to establish a replication link for the following writable directory partition failed. Directory partition: CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,CN={68B2D262-61D2-4AA8-BEA3-E8100DFB9492} Source directory service: CN=NTDS Settings,CN=ROLF-PROXY-2$ISASTGCTRL,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site-Name,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,CN={68B2D262-61D2-4A Source directory service address: rolf-proxy-2.int.rolfcorp.ru:18f2bddc-bf34-480e-b1d3-617c30bcfed8 Intersite transport (if any): This directory service will be unable to replicate with the source directory service until this problem is corrected. User Action Verify if the source directory service is accessible or network connectivity is available. Additional Data Error value: 1772 The list of RPC servers available for the binding of auto handles has been exhausted. ------ I'm at a deadlock.

I have had the same error that Ibukun has had. My issue was the 3 nic in each ISA server set up for the intra-array communications. I am running Windows 2003 SP1 and found out there is an issue with the intregrated NLB of ISA and Windows 2003 NLB. My resolution was to change the communications on ISA server to point to the internal nic's IP and remove the 3 nic used for the intra-array. After that the installation of the second ISA server proceeded without error. Hope this helps.

I was facing the same problem since last month or so and here goes the solution.... 1- Open the ADAM ADSIEDIT from C:\WINDOWS\ADAM\ADAM-adsiedit.msc and a new MMC will be opened. 2- Create a new connection to your ISA Server on port 2171 and select the naming context as Configuration. 3- From left side of MMC expand the CN=Configuration >> CN=Sites >> CN=Default-First-Site-Name >> CN=Servers and delete the CN="Server Name" you are having the problem with. and it works .... cheers Saeed I. Can you elaborate on "there is an issue with the intregrated NLB of ISA and Windows 2003 NLB." as I have believe that a dedicated NIC for Intra-Array is a good idea even with SP1. Cheers JJ

Just wanted to say thanks Chowdry - your solution worked a treat. I was stumped on this for a while. I haven't worked out why the original replica installation failed but once the orphaned server entry was removed from ADAM the installation then worked. Weird. I too would like to know the issue tlfry mentions with "the intregrated NLB of ISA and Windows 2003 NLB" as I am configuring this now. Cheers, Garry

Hello everyone! In my case, I just installed ADAM before installing ISA Server 2006. Although it tries to install it during ISA2006Setup it didn't work for me. Bottom line, add ADAM manually with your Windows 2003 R2 disk (Add/Remove Programs > Windows Components > Active directory services) and then go ahead with the ISA server installation. Regards!
