This is an interesting one. How does one publish a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal through ISA server? I would like to use a path statement. For example an outside user would type http://www.samplesite.com/Intranet, and reach the intranet. I have read and tried the tutorial on just this topic. I believe it was titled "Publishing web sites with path statements". One hangup, I don't know if I can have another DNS entry added to our ISP. Is there a way to publish the SPS 2003 portal through ISA as an extranet without a seperate entry, or how can it be done at all? Microsoft says it will post information about doing this on their website, but so far I have come up snake eyes.

Thanks

Hi Dan,

The Link Translator feature in ISA Server Feature Pack 1 was built for Sharpoint. Check it out!

HTH,

Well, that almost worked. If I have a direct url for example (http://www.sample.com) and use link translation to an internal sharepoint portal site such as (http://Intranet.internal.edu) then there is no problem. However what I am attempting is something like this: (http://www.sample.com/Intranet) to point to (http://Intranet.internal.edu). This did not work. Error 404. I'm assuming this is directly related to the fact that ISA passes the path along with the header information. Does this mean that I need a publicly resolved DNS entry and then use the tutorials for path statements for this to work, or do I have to have a publicly resolved DNS entry and use that to get in from the outside world? Perhaps there is some magic is the Link Translator that I am missing. I have read the tutorial provided in the link translator download, but they are using a URL with no path statement for their example. (ex http://www.fabrikam.com vs http://ww.fabrikam.com/Intranet)!. Oh the joys of being on the bleeding edge.

Thanks

Hi Dan,

I've got some info from a very reliable source that SPS 2003 will not support Web publishing or "bridging" as they want to call it. This is very nasty news if it turns out to be true, because I think ISA should be positioned as the ideal complement to Microsoft solutions.

I've keep you updated as I find out more.

Thanks!
Tom

How odd is that? As I had said in a previous post. I had SPS 2003 working from a simple URL. (http://www.sample.com) what I couldn't get to work at the time was a posting to a path statement at the end of the URL. (http://www.sample.com/Intranet) So either I had a fluke, or something is not kosher. I thought perhaps that because I had IIS and ISA on the same box, it was causing some issues. We are moving our site to an internal box and then shutting down IIS on ISA and changing the web publishing rules. This can then tell me whether my hunch is right or not.

Thanks for the info though. I let you know how things turn out. It might be a couple of days though.

Thanks

Hi Dan,

The problem is with some of the links not be translatable by the link translator, so you get links like http://\\c:\\/file:\stuff.doc, which the translator can't handle. I'm hoping that this issue is going to be resolves because that would really break it for remote access unless you went in and changed the coding on the links.

That would not be comforting option for me. It seems that a great deal of things in SPS 2003 is dynamic created. It would take a great deal of time to recode that. Here's a wrinkle. If I do a link translation to a root URL (http://www.sample.com), I can pass any authentication I want, and I receive the default.aspx page. If I have any path statement at the end, (http://www.sample.com/anything) and change the destination set to match, etc. I do get challenged, but I always receive the error 404 page. My guess is that it has something to do with ISA passing the path statement. So do I have to have another Public DNS entry and then do the path redirect as diagrammed in the tutorials or am I just out of luck?

Thanks

I'm not having any trouble. I'm not even using the link translator. In the Share point central administration you can config alternative urls. Hope this helps.
