Hi, my client has exchange 2003 behind isa 2004 working quite happily sending email via normal DNS. They have a problem sending to one email domain and their ISP has asked them to use Smart Hosts and send to them rather than DNS direct. I reconfigured the exchange server to use Smart Hosts and all out bound mail stopped!! Tried the normal - Telnet to the smart host on port 25 no problems. Setup Outlook Express on the Exchange server and this will not send either - this message from OE Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Subject 'fgneriogb', Account: xxxxxx, Server: 'smtp-out.mail.griffin.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F Get this message from ISA 2004 Closed Connection ISA01 06/09/2007 10:05:26 Log type: Firewall service Status: A connection was abortively closed after one of the peers sent a RST segment. Rule: SMTP from EX01 Source: Internal ( 192.168.1.5:5165) Destination: External (smtp-out.mail.griffin.com 85.189.39.6:25) Protocol: SMTP User: Additional information 1. Hi Pete, quote:
Tried the normal - Telnet to the smart host on port 25 no problems. Setup Outlook Express on the Exchange server and this will not send either - this message from OE Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Subject 'fgneriogb', Account: xxxxxx, Server: 'smtp-out.mail.griffin.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F Installing OE on an Exchange server is not going to work! You will receive a Socket error because the port(s) is in use by Exchange. From the log info it looks like the problem is on the receiving server or something with how you configured the smart host with the packets being dropped by the server. If you have an SMTP (outbound) access rule and you can telnet through, ISA is probably not issue. Was the smart host created at the SMTP virtual server or by using a routing connector? If you only want to route Domain specific SMTP traffic, then creating a routing connector would be your best option for that specific domain. HTH RB
