We have ISA Server 2004+IIS SMTP, and Exchange 5.5 server on another server. Now when we have an issue, the incoming is fine, the outgoing emails can't be sent to centain domains, it gets "smtp;550 5.7.1 Unable to relay " error. In the ISA's event views, there is an event 4001 saying ""An SMTP protocol error occurred. '. The SMTP verb which caused the error is 'RCPT'"

Any suggestions? Many thanks!

Remove IIS STMP service from ISA and install it on another server. Your outgoing emails will be fine.

Thank you for the reply. But we only have one external IP address which is on the ISA box. How do we do that then?

When you install the IIS SMTP service on a separate server, configure a private LAN IP number on the NIC. Server publish the SMTP relay at ISA.

Here is a exelent "how to" to get it working.

You can skipp the part about certificates and external users if you are only going to use the relay function for the Exchange server.
