We web publish several internal sites to the Internet successfully through our ISA server (SP1, FP1, integrated, Win2k SP3). However, on one particular published server we get intermittent 10060 (timeout) errors.
I can actually live with the errors themselves, however, once we get a 10060 error when connecting to the published server, the only way to get the server responding correctly through ISA is to restart the Web Proxy service.
So, here's the scenario:
1. Internal server SERVERA is published to the Internet using web publishing. 2. Users connect using the url 'www.someotherurl.com'. 3. Everything works great for days/weeks/months. 4. A user gets a 10060 error when accessing 'www.someotherurl.com'. 5. ISA web logs show a 10060 error connecting to the published server SERVERA. 6. All subsequent attempts to connect to the published server fail. 7. From the browser on the ISA server I can successfully navigate to the published server (http://servera). 8. If I restart the Web Proxy service, users are once again able to access via 'www.someotherurl.com'
So, it appears that a 10060 flips a switch on our ISA server that says "never look at this site again until the Web Proxy service is restarted". Is this the expected behavior?
FYI, I have also experimented with settings to reduce the occurrence of 10060 errors, for example:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;811087 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;811087
Neither of those articles refer specifically to ISA, so I don't know if they will have any impact.
However, from my perspective there will always be latency or other issues that introduce the random 10060 errors, and my primary concern is the apparent gracelessness of ISA server's recovery from this state.
Any assistance/guidance/advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Scott,
Have you installed the rollup hotfix?
Thanks! Tom

Tom,
Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately I cannot locate anything resembling a "rollup hotfix" for ISA on the Microsoft site. I see individual hotfixes for specific issues, such as gopher and DNS.
Is there a specific "rollup hotfix" to which you are referring, or are you recommending that we install all available hotfixes?
Thanks.
Scott

I found that the rollup hotfix is only available from Microsoft PSS. I have acquired a copy from them and will apply shortly.
I'll come back here and post the results.

Well, we acquired and applied the rollup hotfix, but it did not fix the issue. Any further suggestions or troubleshooting steps? Thanks.

Did you check your network configuration? From my past experience, 10060 occurs when ISA cannot see the web site. When it occurs can you see the web server from ISA? Also did you have your Cache on? I would suggest you turn off cache (at least for troubleshooting).
We also publish web sites and have been doing it for about a year now. We have not seen this problem - there's hope!

Wendy,
Thanks for the feedback. I believe our network configuration is correct, since we successfully publish the problem websites for days/weeks/months without a problem. However, there are occasions when a 10060 error occurs (server down/overloaded, high network latency, etc). When a 10060 error occurs, the site is no longer available from users on the public Internet via the ISA server.
I can, however, start a web browser on my ISA server and successfully attach to the published server using the redirect URL listed in the web publishing rule. You see, the 10060 errors are transient, just a few seconds or minutes, but the website then becomes permanently unavailable until we restart the Web Proxy service.
We have run for extended periods both with caching on and with caching off, with no difference in the issue.
We also publish multiple other sites/servers through this ISA server without incident. In fact, one site that we publish is a separate virtual server on the same server that hosts the two problem sites, and that site has zero problems.
I do not control the back-end servers, so cannot address availability, and expect that I will get 10060 errors into the foreseeable future. My issue is that ISA does not re-establish connectivity to these published servers after the 10060 error.
The one thing about these two problem sites that is different from our other published sites is that they are hosted on non-standard ports on their host servers. However, our publishing rules are designed to connect to these ports, and things work most of the time (until a 10060 error).
Any other advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
