Hi Folks

I was remotely uninstalling a non default instance of SQL 2000 on an SBS 2003 premium edition with ISA 2004 SP3. After the uninstall completed successfully I suddenly lost connection to the server.

It turns out that the firewall service had stopped. After a reboot it became apparent that the Firewall service would not start.
The system event log shows error:

Event ID: 7024
Description: The Microsoft Firewall service terminated with service-specific error 212994 (0x34002).

The application event log shows error:

Source: Microsoft Firewall
Event ID: 7
Description: The Microsoft Firewall was unable to open ADO connection. The MSDE error description is: invalid connection string attribute, [DBNETLIB] [ConnectionOpen (Connect()).] SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

I have reviewed various posts on the net and found some information relating to ensuring the NETWORK SERVICE and LOCAL SYSTEM accounts have been added to the certain Domain Controller Security Policies as per the MS article at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/842207/en-us. I know the article is about MS Fax service but the permissions are supposed to the same for the ISA firewall service, supposedly.

I can confirm that I have completed these steps and rebooted the server and yet still the issue exists.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

By uninstalling SQL and going by the error logging information, you hosed ISA logging. That would be my guess.

Hi Rotorblade

Thanks for the response. I checked the ISA logs configuration and it appears to only be logging to the ISA MSDE instance and not the SQL 2000 named instance that I uninstalled.

I ended up reinstalling the SQL 2000 named instance and the firewall service started again with out problem. At this point I am going to leave the SQL 2000 instance installed and tackle the issue by restoring to a virtual machine.
