Hi,

in the Brazil technet forums came out a doubt if it is possible to configure two external NICs with two different gateways for redundancy.

I know ISA doesn´t support multiple gateways, but a member from the forum said it could be done by using gateway metrics.

For example, If I have two links (main and backup) from two different ISP, I can configure the backup link with a metric 2500 and the main with the metric 1.

Main link
IP Address: 200.200.200.200/24
Default gateway: 200.200.200.201
Metric: 1

Backup link
IP Address: 192.168.254.253
Default gateway: 192.168.254.254
Metric: 2500

According to him, windows will use the default route for outbound access, and in case of dead gateway detection, the backup link will assume.

He tested and it works very well...

My question is: Could this be done?

Regards,
Paulo Oliveira.

Hi,

one more information about my question:
"The Automatic Metric feature is configured independently for each network interface in the network. This feature is useful in situations where you have more than one network interface of the same speed, for example, when each network interface has been assigned a default gateway. In this situation, you may want to manually configure the metric on one network interface, and enable the Automatic Metric feature to configure the metric of the other network interface. This setup can enable you to control the network interface that is used first in the routing of IP traffic."

This was copied from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299540/en-us

Hope someone can answer me.

Regards,
Paulo Oliveira.
