Hello! I've seen that it isn't possible to update ISA 2000 to ISA 2006 (thanks RobertSeattle) on the same machine. Is there a way to export the rules and sets on the 2000 server and import them on a new 2006 ISA server? What would be the best way to go about an upgrade? 2000 -> 2004 -> 2006? Thanks in advance. I appreciate the help! David Rosenthal

Going from 2k to 2k6 using 2k4 in between seems like a viable method, but not used it personally. Based upon my experiences, in-place upgrades from ISA2k to ISA2k4 were pretty awful, so this may affect your "upgrade bounce" plans. Upgrades from 2k4 to 2k6 seem much better, but the versions are much more similar. Maybe now is a good time to rebuild by hand and validate the old config in your 2k setup, as things have moved on quite a bit and you probably want to do things differently now anyhow. Not ideal, but could be a blessing in disguise if you spot a better, more secure, way of doing things! JJ

Thanks Jason. I have quite a few custom protocols, rules and url sets, and don't really want to re-create them all. I found the migration tool on the ISA 2004 CD an created an xml file. Can that be used to re-import the information on an ISA 2006 box? What about all the information in AD (we have an enterprise array)? Will that be reusable, or does it need to be deleted manually? I'm trying to plan my 2000 -> 2006 upgrade strategy as well. When I asked about going from 2000 -> 2004, it was recommended I export my rules, clean install 2004, and then import the rules. Is the same process recommended for 2004 -> 2006? I'd want to avoid a manual reconfig of everything. I personally don't think that is an acceptable upgrade path for any product with such a key impact on a network, especially in enterprise environments. Maybe if it's a small office with a few web sites and servers published and very few customizations, but that is certainly not the case for me. So would this be a viable path, or is there a better route to do this without loosing all config data. Export 2000 config Uninstall 2000 Install 2004 Import config from 2000 into 2004 Export 2004 config Uninstall 2004 Install 2006 Import config from 2004

Note There is no direct upgrade path from ISA Server 2000 to ISA Server 2006. Taken from : http://www.microsoft.com/technet/isa/2006/deploy/upgrade.mspx quote:
1-Export 2000 config 2-Uninstall 2000 3-Install 2004 4-Import config from 2000 into 2004 5-Export 2004 config 6-Uninstall 2004 7-Install 2006 8-Import config from 2004 u can omit step 6, and install ISA 2006 over ISA 2004, the installation will detect the old version and will remove it. Personally, From ISA 2000 to ISA 2004/6 , i always started a fresh install, as u can have plenty of errors will importing your old 2000 rules into your ISA 2004.

I tried to follow the 2000 -> 2004 -> 2006 path you mentioned and didn't get anywhere with the migration from 2000 to 2004. I was able to use the migration tool from the 2004 disk to export my 2000 config, but I couldn't get it to import into the 2004 install. Obviously your mileage may vary.
