Odd issue.
I am running ISA 2004 and certain random users are prompted to enter a password when they open their web browser - while others (about 90%) can open IE and go right through without authenticating to the ISA server. They are all in the same domain, logging into the same domain as ISA, etc. It has me baffled as I cannot find any reason why these certain users who seem to have no common trait are getting prompted. Sometimes they have to authenticate for every web page, and it has gotten to be annoying.

Thoughts?

Hi Tom,

is the 'Require all users to authenticate Web Proxy setting' configured for the Internal interface of your ISA 2004 server? If so, make sure you have implemented http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;885683 .

HTH,
Stefaan

Where do I find that setting? I was looking for it and can't track it down!

Hi Tom,

Configuration -> Networks -> Internal -> Properties -> Web Proxy -> Authentication.

BTW --- if you don't need it checked for a specific reason, leave it unchecked.

I believe i had it checked to make sure that I had user names instead of IP addresses in the logs. Is this correct? Or am I off base?
Thank you for your prompt replies!

Hi Tom,

it's not needed for that. Instead you should require authentication on a rule base. For more info, check out http://www.isaserver.org/articles/ISA2004_AccessRules.html .
