Using Telnet to test SMTP server publishing rule - 27.Apr.2005 2:41:00 PM

I am using ISA 2004 and have used the mail server publishing wizard to publish smtp so we can receive emails.

However before I change the mx records for our domain I wanted to test I have done it correctly by using telnet to connecto the ip address and port 25. however I dont seem to be getting the desired results. It seems to connect and then disconnect straightaway.

If I do it from the internal network to the exchange server ip address I can connect properly and list commands etc.

Is this supposed to happen or have I dont something wrong?

Hello Andy

If your external Nics' IP is 1.1.1.1 then from a machine on your internal network type the following:

Telnet 1.1.1.1 25

This should connect to your internal Mailserver if everything is setup correctly.

I tried this on my Network, both from the ISA Server machine and a machine on the Internal Network and it worked on both.

Hope this helps.

Bye for now

Kevin

Kevin, thanks for your reply. that is what I thought also. but when I try that it seems to connect and show a cursor but when I type anything it doesnt show. I assumed that this was because it wasnt configured for localecho so I tried it again my just typing telnet, then doing set locallecho. and finally typing open 1.1.1.1 25. When I do this it pauses whilst trying to connect and then says press anykey to continue.

I think from this is might be working but i would feel a bit happier if I could get the same telnet results as when I type telnet 192.168.16.252 25. which is the ip address of the internal nic

Hello Andy

Just curious but what happens if you go to your MailServer machine and telnet the loopback address on port 25?

If I go to the exchange machine and telnet 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.16.252 on port 25 it all works perfectly.

I am wondering whether due to some configuration element of isa that i cannot properly telnet it from external addresses, is there a rule I can setup to allow telnet from external networks?

Hi Andy,

you should server publish your internal SMTP server. This implies that the host running the SMTP service must be configured as a SecureNAT client unless you have applied http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311777 .

There are some ISP will block the user to use other smtp server except their own. You can't connect other smtp server at port 25. Make sure you are not in that case. As I know, Sympatico in Canada did.
