In the last 18 months I've installed nearly 20 customers who have ISA2004-DC2003 with standart edge network configurations. One of my customers has a strange VNC problem since 2 weeks. When I try to reconnect through VNC after closing a VNC connection to their server I just get a very quick flash of the desktop window and then nothing happens. Each time I have to manually let them close the VNC server service on their server and restart it to be able to connect again. This behaviour started nearly 2 weeks ago and none of my other customers do have the same problem. Before that I could reconnect to them anytime I wanted to. I'm using the old 3.3.7 version of the VNC server and viewer.

But the oddities do not end here. After experiencing this problem I decided to switch to the new version of VNC Server (4.1.6). And the problems didn't end there, too. This new version does not use any different ports than the old version which is TCP 5900. Therefore I didn't change the VNC publishing rule on my customer's ISA box. So I did expect to connect (or at least to experience the same problem as the former version) to the server. But the VNC server responds with this message : "No matching security types. Do you wish to attempt to reconnect to ...". Every attempt does return with this message again. I did a basic connection test with this new version of VNC on my virtual machines and saw that at the first connection the VNC Server was issuing a security key to the client. I think that this process is being blocked by ISA but don't know the details.

Could please someone shed some light on these problems ? Meanwhile I'll be looking for possible solutions on the net. If I find any solution, I'll post it here.

Thanks in advance

Hi Deni,

What information do you find regarding these connections in the ISA firewall's log files?

Thanks!
Tom

Yesterday I had to connect to them again and asked them to restart their VNC server again. They didn't do anything cause they told me that VNC was already active in the background. So I tried to connect through the old version and received a message stating that the versions didn't match. Then I tried to connect via the new version and puff there was my security key question again. After answering it my customer's server negotiated with me and sent the key. I was able to connect to them and now I can reconnect whenever I want.

I haven't done anything to resolve my issue and therefore I don't know what wasn't functioning before. Maybe the ISA server needed some time to let me go through it ;)

PS : Mr. Shinder, my name is "deniz" which means "sea" in turkish. Btw, it's not spelled like "Denis" in english.

Hi Deniz,

Thanks for letting me know the correct spelling of your name! I like to get these things right

Thanks for the follow up! Maybe it was a problem with the VNC config?

Tom
