VPN Hangups - 20.Jul.2008 12:36:19 PM

I am running ISA Server 2006 SE running W2K3 SP2 as a perimeter firewall with 3 NICs, one internal, two external. The domain controller sits behind the firewall and also serves DNS and DHCP. Client VPN connections resolve DNS correctly both internally and externally.

The problem is that VPN clients experience "VPN hangups" whereby the connection goes silent but not dead for about 15 seconds, then re-establishes itself. During these silent periods there is no IP traffic at all, just complete silence. Outlook clients show the hourglass over the Outlook toolbar icon, IE looks for but cannot find websites, etc. These silent periods easily happen 5 - 10 times per hour.

The event logs on the ISA box show nothing. There is a reserved block of IP addresses for VPN clients that are not served up by DHCP.

Can anyone please help me? I am at a loss to explain this behavior and it is very, very frustrating.

I had static IP addresses being assigned, moved to DHCP assignment by installing the RRAS DHCP relay. No luck, still getting VPN hangups, about 20 to 30 each hour, it's just ridiculous. And no errors at all in the event log.

I also upgraded to ISA Server 2006 SP1, no dice, didn't change anything.

This is really driving me nuts, has anyone got a clue at all where I might even begin to look?
