I have a user connecting via a VPN. If they are working over the connection I can ping them OK.

But if they stop actively working over the VPN, although its still connected I can no longer ping them.

If they start doing something again I can start pinging them.

Is there some sort of timeout? I'd like the connection to stay up and two way while they are connected. Can this be configured?

Hi Richard,

Why are you pinging VPN clients?

Good question!

We have an old accounts system which runs on AIX unix. The VPN user in question telnets into the AIX box and uses the accounts system fine over the VPN.

However, in order to print from the accounts system the VPN user's printer needs to be visible to the AIX box.

To get around this we have a print queue on the ISA box which the AIX can connect to. This print queue then forwards the print job to the VPN client. We can't connect directly from AIX to the VPN user because AIX cannot cope if it loses the connction, so this works around that problem.

It works OK much of the time but sometimes it stops working because the ISA server printer loses its connction to the VPN client. When this happens we try pinging and the request times out.

If we instruct the VPN user to start pinging us, all of a sudden we can ping back and the print queue comes to life.

The ping issue is a symptom rather than the actual problem, which as you can see is a bit long winded!

Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

Richard
