Greetings,

For years my small business has been behind an ISA 2004 server.  All of a sudden several of my people, including myself, are seeing red Xs on our Firewall Clients, accompanied by the "Disabled: Cannot authenticate to ISA Server..." message.

In every instance these are workgroup notebooks, ie, not domain-joined, but this has never been a problem in the past.  The Windows XP "Stored User names and Passwords" feature has allowed us to authenticate to the ISA server using domain credentials, and we've been working this way for years.

Recently several of us have upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate, and it seems that the 2004 firewall client is not interested in playing nice with our old tricks.  The ISA real-time monitor shows that the clients are not authenticating properly.  All I have to do is fire up a NNTP session and, boom, there's the red X on the system tray icon, and the ISA monitor makes some noise about "unidentified network traffic" on port 1745.

If I retest the ISA server using the client tool, the X goes away, but I can bring it right back again by firing up an FTP session, or just about anything else.

These problems occur regardless of state of the client firewall, or, as best I can determine, the configuration of the network profile.

I have this question for the experts: have I stumbled across a sea change in how the firewall client will work with Vista?  Or will this all sort itself out with the new firewall client, once it will install on Vista machines?

Thank you and the very best regards,

Tim ==

Thanks, Stefaan.  It is certain that that much is true.

Is there something fundamentally wrong with my methods that will prevent me from working the same way once the Vista-capable client is released?

As the firewall client is supported on vista for a while now i really hope this would be solved by now. I have two vista clients in the same configuration as Tim (in a workgroup configuration, workgroup is named the same as the netbios domainname the laptops are working on) but i am still unable to successfully authenticate with ISA 2006. Automatic configuration is working ok, i have added a network password to the users account for the whole domain (*.domain.tld) that is working fine when connecting to exchange through exchange anywhere, tried to run the firewall client serviceunder the local system account. All not helping. In my firewall log i see the following Result codes when authentication is tried:

1745     Microsoft Firewall Client     Initiated Connection     0x0 ERROR_SUCCESS
1745     Microsoft Firewall Client     Closed Connection      0x80074e21 FWX_E_ABORTIVE_SHUTDOWN

I hope someone knows how i can successfully authenticatie to my ISA server!

Frans

The new firewall client fixed it on my network.  But, when I travel to a friend's business with an ISA2006 server, I can't get it to work.  Not sure what to do about it.

Hi All

I had to put the default gateway on each client as the ISA Server and this fixed it for me.  The client is all well and good but depending on your network configuration i.e. no WINS then you will have to configure the def gateway.

For me I face a lot of problems with Firewall clients and no one can help!

But what I did I used the Secure Nat client rather than Firewall client.

always my problem when I use Firewall client software in my clients .. No one inside my internal network can use outlook!!!!

we all have serious problems with firewall client software

Hi Tim,

you need to mirror the accounts that are in the workgroup machine to the ISA Server SAM.

That is if you have a laptop user with the following:

username: Tarek
password: Majdalani

then go to ISA Server, and create a local user with the following :

username: Tarek
password: Majdalani

in this way, the Firewall client that is on a workgroup machine will be able to authenticate .

HTH,
Tarek
