I know this topic has been covered quite a bit, but Id like to see if I clarify the issue of a WAN backup on a budget.

I would like to setup ISA 2004 with ADSL and have ISDN backup for when the ADSL link fails, the server setup will be

Internal
192.168.60.10
255.255.255.0

External
82.x.x.10
255.255.255.248
82.x.x.11

Router (One to One NAT)
82.x.x.11
255.255.255.248
213.x.x.x (assigned by PPPOA)

Option 1. Use a WAN redundant ADSL Router to dial ISDN when the link drops. The ISDN cannot be assigned the IP address range of the ISA Servers external NIC, a higher priority for the MX record will be added to the ISDN dialup IP address. Im thinking of using Zyxel Prestige 662HW for this purpose.

Am I on the right lines of thinking here that ISA will in this config stay working when the router uses the failover to ISDN.

Or do I need to have the ISA server set as follows

Internal
192.168.60.10
255.255.255.0

External
10.0.0.10
255.0.0.0
10.0.0.11

Router (NAT)
10.0.0.12
255.0.0.0

Router WAN
82.x.x.11 (ADSL PPPOA)

Router WAN
10.0.0.13 (ISDN Backup Route)

So if the ADSL link drops ISA passes packets to 10.0.0.12, the Router then recognises the link as down and routes these packets to the ISDN backup on 10.0.0.13 Will this be transparent to ISA?

Ive read about using an extra NIC in ISA in a perimeter network to achieve this, is this possible?

Im not in the market for Rainconnect, in fact I have about a budget of ú500 for this after the ISA Server!

All help appreciated.

Cheers

Kyle

Hi Kyle,

Option 1 seems best here.

HTH,
Tom
