Everyone talks about wpad.dat and the fact that it stores the "configuration information" for the auto-discovery. Some posts allude to this file being created by some feature in ISA management. I have looked at "Client Configuration / Web Browser" and although I see the proxy settings there it makes no mention of creating the actual wpad.dat file. I have configured dhcp with the appropriate settings and the last peice that I think I need is this wpad.dat. I have searched the entire hard drive of the ISA server and that file does not exist. Could someone please explain the CONTENTS of this file, not what it's used for-----I already know that.
My server is Cache/Proxy server only - no firewall.

Hi Mike,

the wpad.dat file is *not* a real file. So, you will never find it on the ISA's hard disk. It is created on the fly when clients request it. If you like to see what is actual tranferred, take a Network Monitor trace on the ISA internal interface. [Big Grin]

Hi!

Well, make life easier, take a browser and save the result from http://isaserver:autodiscoveryport/wpad.dat to a textfile.

OK, thanks for that info. But here is my next question: Using a normal user account I couldn't get the file, only after entering a domain administrators credentials was I given the file. I assume that this then is why autoconfig of the browser is not working for me, but how do I change permissions on a file that isn't there?

I'm sorry, but I don't have any idea what is causing this! [Frown]

HELP! Anybody?

Thanks,
Stefaan
