Hi!
In our company we have 2 ISA 2004 Std. Edition in a cluster; NLB. I know that Std.edition is not cluster-aware, but we have done this for load-balancing purposes. We have defined a DNS-name for the cluster-address and when we use this address in the manual proxy-config in IE, it works fine. The problems is as follows; we cannot use the "Automatically detect settings" in IE. It seems that IE doesn't find the WPAD file on the cluster.. We use DCHP option 252 to configure the wpad for the clients. (http://isaserver.company.com:8080/wpad.dat). (We use port 8080 int the ISA-settings for automatic proxy detection). If we use this string in the "Use automatic configuration script" in IE, it works fine. I can also type http://isaserver.company.com:8080/wpad.dat in the address field and download the wpad.dat file. Could this be a problem related to the cluster? Because when I look at the wpad.dat file i referes to the DNS-name to one of the two ISA-servers (witch one seems random, according to the NLB-config), not the DNS-name of the cluster. I have tried different combinations to solve this problem, but without any luck. Hope that someone can help me. Best regards, Psl

When you manually type in the URL, do you get challenged for credentials?
Can you take a network capture on the Internal network interface and see what ISA does with the request?

also, do you have port 80 set in the internal properties under auto discovery? it needs to be port 80, not 8080

The problem is probably that the auto config thingy returns the individual addresses of the ISA servers as the proxy, not the load balanced address. Do you have a firewall between your proxy clients and the ISA servers? If so, you're probably only allowing traffic on tcp 8083 to the NLB address? If that's the case then it won't work as the clients wil try to connect to the individual addresses (take a look at the wpad.dat file). I dunno why they didn't make it smart enough to figure out that the network is load balanced... oh well.
