Ok I got ISA installed on a win2k adv server machine, and the services start EXCEPT for web proxy services.

"Web proxy service could not initialize. Error code -2146893042 Data is the internal error code."

firewall services start, isa control services start etc.

This is installed in integrated mode (firewall + cache)

We have DNS and DHCP installed on another machine, the default gateway on interal nic is blank, and dns is set to internal dns

I try to start the proxy services and it just fails again.

I can ping a server name and it does return an ip so DNS is probably working INSIDE correctly... I can ping OUTSIDE of the isa server out to the internet, but can not get it to resolve the name on the internet.
DNS is set to forward to our ISP DNS.

Any clues?

The error code you get translates into
-2146893042 = 0x8009030E = SEC_E_NO_CREDENTIALS

Do you also see the SCHANNEL event saying "A fatal error occurred while creating an SSL server credential."?

And SCM event 7023 "The Microsoft Proxy Service terminated with the following error: No credentials are available in the security package."?

If yes, then it sounds like you have imported a "bad" SSL certificate and need to remove it.

Then follow http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q261/6/55.asp

Yeah I had found those KB's as well, but no help as I've not touched any certs. I don't require SSL as this is just a test machine.
This machine had windows 2000 adv server installed then ISA then SP2 so no certificates should be on there besides the defaults.

After I installed ISA I then uninstalled IIS to see if maybe that was the problem, but it did not help.

I can ping an IP through ISA, but I can't view a web page through it even when I use the IP. I'm guessing this is due to the web proxy service being dead. Would that also contribute to not being able to resolve DNS through it? (can't ping a url).

Why it has an error about certificates and SSL when cert server is not installed, and IIS is uninstalled I don't know.

Any clues?

Did anyone solve this problem. I've been running ISA for 3 months now without a problem. But today after a reboot, the web proxy service won't start with the identical problem as stated above. I'm not using SSL, no SSL certificate is installed, and IIS is not installed. What's going on? I'll keep searching though the forums but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi G,

I've not seen this error, but the experience you share here is starting to make me dread restarting my server, which has been running faithfully for months.

I'll keep an eye out for this problem too.

I am wondering if anyone did manage to resove this issue. I am experiencing the same error and I have NO certificate installed. The error just came on out of the blue about 3 days ago. Besides the two articles cited on this thread, I can't find anything in MS's site that would help. It's driving me (and my clients) NUTS!
