We are running an ISA2004 EE array with web proxy and firewall clients.

Users accessing a particular site (pubmed.gov and www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) are getting a "Webpage has expired" page in IE7 when clicking the browser's Back button to return to a search results page.  This never used to happen, but we are not sure what changed.

I have tried everything I can think of to resolve this for her but nothing I have done has helped.  Some of the things I have tried are:
- configuring ISA to not cache these pages
- configuring ISA to permit direct access to these sites

I do not have this problem with Firefox as the browser, however.  Problem is this browser is not currently supported in our hospital.

Support staff at nih.gov have recommended various settings changes in IE, all to no avail.

My post on this forum is really my last hope.  If you have ANY suggestions I would love to hear them.

Thanks in advance.

The first thing I would recommend is to create an exception rule in your cache. (I see you already did that)...  So did wipe your cache afterwards.  You should be able to stop your ISA services, delete the cache folder, then restart the services.  ISA should recreate the folder with a fresh cache file.

Thanks for your suggestion... I did all that, but this does not help.

I went so far as putting a network sniffer on the PC I was testing with to try to see what, if any, network traffic was generated at the moment I click the browser's (IE6 or 7) Back button.  I was surprised to see that no network traffic was generated when I clicked the Back button.  This means that either IE itself, or the Firewall Client (or both) is responsible for this behaviour... I suspect both are partially responsible.

Furthermore, when I try this test from Firefox on the same PC, with Firefox configured to surf directly and the ISA FWC enabled, I DO NOT get the "page expired" message when clicking Firefox's Back button... instead I get back to the search results page as expected.

I'm not sure what's going on here, but it is very frustrating, needless to say.

Thanks again for any and all suggestions.

John

Another thing to try...  Have you tried toggling the Http1.1 through proxy connections setting within IE to see if it fixes your issue.  Make sure you clear the IE cache before each test.

Can you demonstrate this behavior on other sites or just one in particular?

Yep!  I have tried that too.

Are you in a position to test this for me from your location without too much trouble on your part?  If not, that's OK.  It would just be helpful to know if someone else in a similar config could try it.

Thanks again.

John

Sure...  Why not?  I have two production and one test servers to try it through.

Great!  Here are the steps I take:

1. Browse to http://pubmed.gov .
2. On the Search line at the top of the page, in the "for" field, type in a drug name... lidocaine, for example, and click Go.
3. When the search results page comes up, click on one of the little document icons beside a search entry.
4. When that page shows, click the Back button and let me know what happens.

Thanks very much. :)

John

That's AWESOME!  I tried it through my ISA 2004 Standard box and generated the same results.  I tried it through my new ISA 2006 test box with a plain-Jane rule-set and it went through without a hitch.  Don't have time to research much more right now...but perhaps I will dig into a bit since it could impact my users as well.

That's VERY interesting, Jack!!  Thanks again for trying this for me.  If you find anything further, when you get time, please let me know.

Thanks again!

John

Ok...  What I did was create the following rule for my admin test workstation.  Placed this at the top of my rule set to get away from any HTTP filtering or custom blocks I have in place.

Allow > All Outbound > Test Workstation to External > All users

The site now works on my test workstation.  My theory is one of the HTTP filters is blocking a transaction for that website in particular.  Have not looked further to verify that yet.

Interesting...

I already have a similar rule in place, but it was much further down in my list.  I will move it to the very top and try again.  All of the rules above it are web server and server publishing rules, so I'm not sure what difference it will make for me here, but it is worth a try! Stay tuned.

John

Well, I moved the rule to the very top and tried again, with no luck.

So something else is different between our configs... but what??!!

Hmm...  Not sure.  Here is a quick break down of what I have.

On server:
I have SP3, Http compression Enabled for all (html docs only), tcp connection limits set to 250 (nearly unlimited for servers), caching enabled but not caching dynamic content, not requiring authentication for my test rule.  ISA BPA tool was used for a report and all MS KB issues resolved.  Nothing really odd in monitor when described behavior is produced or not.

On client:
1.  Using firewall client
2.  Http 1.1 through proxy connections DISABLED or ENABLED
3.  IE 7 all latest patches
4.  Popup blocking off/phising filter off/protection mode off

Also do you have a firewall in front which may be doing any scanning or script blocking. OR...is your antivirus/spyware detection configured to immediately delete cookies?

The only way I could get it to fail once I had the rule above in place was to delete the cache and try to go back (which makes perfect sense).  Why you are not able to produce the same is a mystery to me.  I am not as good about keeping up with the MS KB articles.  I have found this site to be helpful in the past.

Thanks, Jack.  I don't believe I am running SP3 so that's the first thing I will try, I think.  Actually, I didn't even know it was available!

I will also take a look at the KBAlertz site. Thanks.

Well, sadly, after my upgrade to SP3, IT STILL DOESN'T WORK... and I was SO hopeful!

I was as well...  There were a couple issues with SP3 that have been resolved with some minor registry tweaks.  If you run the BPA tool it will find them for you.  I know it will not help with the current issue.

How/where do you configure this?

OK, I see. Thanks.

I am now going to trying disabling my custom cache rule for this site where I originally disabled caching for this site.  Stay tuned
