OK - got an ISA 2004 SP1 on Windows 2003 Server deployed. Everything was very happy and when it works everyone is very happy. But for some reason, occasionally it just stops - no messages in event logs, no alerts, nothing - just sits there. A restart of the FW service usually sorts it out.

The machine is not doing anything too complex - it's not a member of the domain but has L2TP VPN and OWA/OMA/Active-Sync configured as per documents on this very site! It's not under a heap of load either and I'm completely stumped as to why it goes into a holding pattern.

Our one here is in a similar config and we don't have these issues so any ideas are appreciated.

Hi Bart,

Are you sure its an ISA firewall issue? The "Internet" stops working a lot more frequently than an ISA firewall does.

Thanks!
Tom

Morning Tom,

I would normally agree with you, but the link for this particular Server is pretty darn good (100 MB connection into ISP via fibre).

I can do an Active-Sync and nothing happens, restart the FW service (and now I don't remove the cables out of paranoia!), and bingo-bango it jumps back into life.

I will do some more checks on the server itself and take it from there.

Thanks again and keep up the good work on the site. I have a copy of your book coming out to NZ so looking forward to the read!

Urgh - I think I found the problem/difference. There are two PIXs sitting out in front of the ISA Server - one online and one offline for redundancy - whereas my one just connects straight into the router to the internet.
I had the first PIX as a gateway with metric 0 and the second on a metric of 3.
Removing this may have corrected the issue - I will keep an ear to the ground. If it works I will give myself an uppercut.
Thanks Tom and particularly an article from Jim Harrison which would appear to sort this out (or alternatively RainConnect).
Feel a bit embarassed as I had been keeping an eye on the 'multiple gateway' scenario info but obviously didn't sink in at the time. Lesson learnt!
