Hi Al,

Yes, the ISA firewall has a Web proxy filter, and part of the Web proxy filter's feature set is Web caching. But remember, the ISA firewall is a first, second and last. Always a firewall, but it can be hobbled so that only the Web proxy filter and stateful packet inspection work properly.

You can't open the cache file.

HTH,
Tom

So if i request www.isaserver.org ?
What will the client cache? (ex. you can open the webpage offline because it stored in a file).

What will the DNS Server cache? (Is it the IP Addresses and the name of the sites).

So what will the ISA Server Cache?

What the client will cache is dependant on how the browser has been configured.

Usually your DNS server will cache the site name and it's correspoding IP address so that next time you type www.isaserver.org, it does not need to query an Internet DNS server to resolve the name.

By default, ISA Server will not cache anything. You will need to enable web proxy caching and then ISA Server will cache the web page, but not all of it. However you can customize ISA Server caching to cache the whole page, or only those items you want to be cached.

Thanks for the Fantastic description.

How can i check the cache of the DNS Server, whats the path of the file?

How can i set the ISA to cache part of the page or the whole web page? Do you have an article for that?

Thanks,

Just a slight correction - ISA will not cache to a drive by default, but it will cache in memory. Small, but important, difference.

If i can't open the cache file in ISA.

So is there a way to check the DNS records of the website in the DNS server. (i.e. IP Address and names).

Thanks,

If you are using a MS DNS Server, as long as you use the advanced view, you can see the folder called "Cached Lookups" and all the cached records inside it.
However, understand that this is something completely different than what the ISA server caches.

Do you have a comparison of what each server (ISA & DNS) will cache?

Also, i want to know if the ISA cache has any intelligent in name resolution or its just DNS responsibility?

Glad you asked what each type of server caches -

DNS only caches the records that map names to IP addresses, and only for DNS zones that are not hosted on the DNS server itself. If your DNS server hosts a zone for your company, for example "dnsquestions.com", and that same DNS server is sent a request to resolve the IP addresses for "yahoo.com", then the records for "yahoo.com" will be cached. If you send a request to it to resolve "www.dnsquestions.com", then it doesn't put it in the cache because it doesn't need to. That's because it hosts the domain "dnsquestions.com".

ISA caches web content from the web sites that clients request. In other words, it caches the files that make up the web pages themselves.

You can see that there is a big difference between what DNS does and what ISA (or any proxy server) does.
In either case, caching cuts down on network traffic and processor load, but I would say that ISA caching saves a lot more resources than DNS caching because of all that Web content that it caches.

I think I already answered your second question above, but the answer is that ISA does absolutely no name resolution. That is strictly done by DNS (or WINS in some cases, but lets not complicate things).

I hope I've made this clear and helped you understand the difference between the two.

Thanks for this information, i can view all Internet names / IP records.

The answer is great but do you think that the Internet temprory files in clients do the same what ISA cache do.
