Hell guys,

I've bought a lovely new ISA Server 2004 HP DL320 bundle to replace this old GNAT box, and am spending some time putting it in.

I've found this dead handy tutorial

http://download.microsoft.com/download/3/e/2/3e2ae4a2-67a0-4431-88aa-dda29e592e3c/isasequickstart.doc

Which is helping me through (i'm kinda familiar with ISA 2000)

Now, I can see why the ISA Server wants to be a DNS Server - that is good - but I can't see why it must be a DHCP server as well.

I'm being recommended to turn off my other DHCP Servers (what ever happened to the M$ 70/30 redundancy split?) ... what 'need' is there to do this? I'm curious ...

Thanks

S.S.

I don't know that it's really a need, per se. It's just a little easier when the ISA server is also the DHCP server. That way you don't have to go through the crap of setting up DHCP relay, which isn't a pain just because you have to install it, but more because it doesn't really work the way they say it will when you do. Like - you'll think you have it all set up, and it still won't work properly - which I could say about a great many things when dealing with ISA, but this is just one more headache you can fairly easily shovel off of the pile.

Hi Spence,

Not required. Just useful for those companies who don't have another DHCP server.

HTH,
Tom

Thanks guys ...

Your book arrived Tom ... total overkill for my needs - but great reference. Thanks.
